Ada girls claim crown at Crossings Christian

Mar. 29—OKLAHOMA CITY — The Ada High School girl's tennis team continued its strong start to the spring season by capturing the team championship earlier this week at the Crossings Christian Tournament.

The Lady Cougars won the title with 28 team points, edging runner-up Deer Creek of Edmond which collected 26.

In the boy's tournament, the banged-up Cougars finished sixth. Private-school powerhouse Bishop McGuiness won the event with 27 points and Yukon followed with 24.

"Both the boys and girls had a great tournament at a tough Crossings Christian Tournament," said Ada head tennis coach Terry Swopes. "The boys were missing two varsity players due to injuries and the girls played outstanding and ended up as tournament champions."

Both Ada teams compete in the rugged Heritage Hall Tournament of Champions Thursday (girls) and today (boys).

Both Ada teams will host their tournament next week. The Ada Girls Tournament is scheduled for April 5 and the Ada Boys Tournament will take place April 6.

BOYS

Only the No. 1 Doubles team of Jackson Swopes and Tate Danielson played at their regular divisions for the Cougars. That tandem dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to John Paul Dillon and Sumner Shapard of Crossings Christian in the finals.

Ada finished sixth in each of the other three divisions.

In No. 2 Doubles, Matthew Anderson and Gus Byrd dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to the team of Phelps and Woody of Deer Creek.

In the No. 1 Singles fifth-place match, Jonah Link of Duncan got the best of Ada's Brady Bacon by a 6-2, 6-2 count.

Ada's Drew Lillard shut out Isaiah Munoz of Durant 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 Singles fifth-place matchup.

"All of them competed hard and did a great job filling in for us," Swopes said.

GIRLS

Ada dominated the doubles draws at the Crossings Christian event.

In No. 1 Doubles, the team of Jessi Bolin and Sadie Epps turned back Ochs and Parises of Deer Creek 6-1 6-3 for the title.

Ada's No. 2 Doubles team of Lilly Cadenhead and Jerzie O'Neal held off Yukon's Abby Ankrom and Ellie Lebsack 6-4, 7-6 to claim that title.

In No. 1 Singles, Zoey Brown captured fifth place by rallying past Campbell Cryer of Crossing Christian 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.

And Ada's Kyle Witt knocked off Clara Bowen of Yukon for third place in the No. 2 Singles division.
