Ada girls roll to Guthrie Tournament title

Apr. 11—The Ada High School girl's tennis team made tournament victory No. 6 look easy.

The Lady Cougars piled up 62 team points Monday at the Guthrie Tournament and rolled to the championship. The event was hosted by the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

Ada head coach Terry Swopes saw a sixth different lineup win the championship on Monday.

"So far so good," Swopes said of his team's blistering start to the 2024 spring season. "I will say I don't know if we've ever had the stat line of winning six tournaments with six different lineups. This last tournament was the first time we got to play our original lineup."

Carl Albert was runner-up at the event with 47 points and Oklahoma Christian School finished third at 43. Guthrie followed at 42 and the Byng Lady Pirates settled in at the fifth spot with 38 points. Christian Heritage Academy also had 38 points.

The Byng team was hindered when No. 1 Singles player Yocelin Hernandez withdrew after only one match due to illness.

The Ada girls will vie for its seventh team title today when they compete at the Henryetta Tournament.

The Byng Lady Pirates are off until traveling to the Tecumseh Quad next Tuesday (April 16).

LADY COUGARS

The Ada bunch made finals appearances in all four divisions at the Guthrie event.

In No. 2 Doubles, Ada's Lilly Cadenhead and Jerzie O'Neal rallied past Sienna Brewer and Ashton Bullard of Christian Heritage Academy 5-7, 6-1, 10-5 in an exciting championship matchup.

The Ada No. 1 tandem of Jessi Bolin and Zoey Brown pushed past Audrey Boatright and Jayci Cole of Byng 6-2, 6-2 in that all-local finals matchup.

Ada's No. 2 Singles player Kylee Witt knocked off Bailey Rusche of Carl Albert 6-1, 6-1 for the championship.

Ada's Sadie Epps nearly pulled off an incredible comeback before Oklahoma Christian School standout Audrey Crooks held her off by a 7-6, 1-6, 10-8 count for the No. 1 Singles crown.

LADY PIRATES

As previously mentioned, the Byng No. 1 Doubles team of Audrey Boatright and Jayci Cole battled to the finals before running into a red-hot Ada squad.

The Byng duo of Emily Holloway and Harmoni Moore got the best of Gracie Thiebaud and Emersen Villagrana of Duncan with a thrilling 6-1, 3-6, 10-5 win in the No. 2 Doubles third-place match.

And in No. 2 Singles, Kylee Hood of Byng dropped Rosa Torez of Tulsa Edison 6-4, 6-2 for ninth place.
