Adam Silver will host call with NBA players Friday to discuss concerns as practice facilities open
NBA commissioner Adam Silver and National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts will host a call for players Friday to answer any questions players have about practice facilities opening, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.
The timing of the call is not a coincidence. Friday also marks the first day practice facilities can reopen to NBA players. Only a couple teams can open up their facilities due to local laws regarding social distancing. At least one team — the Dallas Mavericks — will not reopen its facility even though Texas’ stay-at-home order has ended.
Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter said the call would cover the things the players can and cannot do as the NBA looks to restart its season, according to CBS Sports.
"Once tomorrow hits, because we have a special meeting with Adam Silver where all players join, we are going to learn more about what we can and what we cannot do," Kanter said. "The NBA is all about player safety and fan safety, so we're just going to see what Adam Silver says tomorrow... All we can do right now is wait to see what Adam Silver has to say."
The call will reportedly be an open forum for players to ask questions and share concerns regarding practice facilities reopening. While some players — like Kanter — have expressed excitement over getting back on the court, others — like CJ McCollum — have reservations.
Given that the world is in an unprecedented situation as a result of coronavirus, it’s unclear how the NBA should handle its ramp up to continuing its season. In order to make some players feel more comfortable, the league will have to provide answers to some tough questions during Friday’s call.
