Arsenal booked their spot in the group stages of the Women’s Champions League with a 1-0 win at Ajax.

The tie was finely poised after last week’s 2-2 draw in London, but Vivianne Miedema gave the Gunners victory in Amsterdam, sealing a 3-2 aggregate victory.

The Gunners put in an acomplished display in stormy conditions in the Dutch capital and could have led in the opening 20 minutes but Stina Blackstenius shot straight at the Ajax goalkeeper.

Miedema showed her class and settled any nerves six minutes into the second half as she struck home in style, finding the corner from 20 yards after a dynamic drive towards goal.

The Dutchwoman could have added a second soon after but her shot was well saved by Lize Kop.

The Gunners had a scare in the final 20 minutes when Tiny Hoekstra stabbed wide from close range after good work by Nadine Noordam.

But Jonas Eidevall’s side survived and put their name in the hat for Monday’s group stage draw.

Beth Mead interview: ‘I’ll ride high on Euros win for rest of my life’

16:18 , Jonathan Gorrie

A north London derby, a 4-0 win, a WSL attendance record and, all being well, the promise of five more Emirates Stadium matches to come before the season is out.

As starters go, this one was fairly meaty, the kind that would have you glancing nervously at the set menu as the plates were cleared, doubtful of having the stomach for the delights to come, were it not, of course, for the fact that the collective appetite for women’s football has never been greater.

Beth Mead, certainly, did not hesitate to indulge, opening the scoring after just five minutes (“I should have scored two minutes earlier”) and then departing once it was complete to a half-lap of honour, a slow-motion Mexican wave of adulation as chairs flipped up and the Emirates rose in ritual salute of its European Champion, confirming its wholesale indoctrination into the cult of Meado.

“I knew people would wind me up, saying I was milking it!” Mead tells Standard Sport, though the moment was actually the product of some pernickety officiating.

Williamson: Euro 2022 glory has fired me up to win things at Arsenal

16:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

England captain Leah Williamson says going all the way at Euro 2022 has made her hungry to win major honours with Arsenal.

Williamson led England to glory this summer on home soil, with the Lionesses claiming their first-ever major trophy in women’s football.

The centre-back (right) is now turning her attention to domestic matters, as Arsenal kick off their Women’s Super League season against Brighton tonight.

Arsenal lost the title on the final day of last season, with Chelsea pipping them to first place by one point, and Williamson is determined to finish on top this time.

Arsenal run riot over Spurs as WSL attendance record smashed in derby

This could be a very good week for Arsenal, having already put rivals Tottenham to the sword in front of a record crowd.

Arsenal produced a dominant performance to brush aside rivals Tottenham in a record-breaking north London derby.

A highest-ever Women’s Super League (WSL) crowd of 47,367 was on hand to watch a thoroughly one-sided contest at the Emirates Stadium, with a brace from Vivienne Miedema and further goals from Euro 2022 hero Beth Mead and Rafaelle Souza securing a second successive 4-0 victory to begin the delayed campaign for Jonas Eidevall’s Gunners.

Eidevall sends Ajax message

15:41 , Jonathan Gorrie

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Arsenal boss said: “I thought they [Ajax] played with a lot of confidence when we played them last week, and I’m under no illusion that this game will be anything else. Like, it will be a hard game. We will need to be very good.

“Away games in Europe are tough, especially when we’re playing against a good team like Ajax. So, we will need to be good in all aspects of the game. If we can be that, I believe we can go through. But it’s up to us to reach that level.”
