Graeme Souness says Alan Hansen is on the road to recovery after the Liverpool legend was taken into hospital with a serious illness.

Souness revealed on talkSPORT this morning that he had spoken to the Liverpool and Scotland legend on the phone on Sunday night and that Hansen seemed in good spirits. The Rangers legend is close pals with Hansen after sharing a dressing room with him at Anfield and has also regularly worked with him as a pundit.

Liverpool announced on June 9 that Hansen had been rushed to the emergency services and that he was "seriously ill". However, speaking from Germany as he covers Euro 2024, Souness issued a heartening update on the former Partick Thistle defender.

He told Jim White and Simon Jordan: “I spoke to him yesterday and he sounded fabulous so I hope that’s him on the way to a full recovery. He’s definitely back because he did nothing but take the Mickey out of me!

“I’ve been speaking to his son and Janet his wife and I’ve been phoning his phone, his phone number. I got on the train on Sunday and I was looking for my seat and my phone rang and I could see it was Big Al. I was thinking ‘Oh no, don’t answer that’.

"So I sat down and got the courage to phone back and HE answered the phone. He’s been in a difficult place but the way he sounded yesterday, he’s back, and I hope I’m right.”
