Liverpool confirmed on Sunday that the former defender is seriously ill in hospital. The club is providing support to the 68-year-old’s family.

Hansen has lived in Southport with his wife Janet, having been married since 1980. The couple have a son, Adam, and a daughter, Lucy. Lucy is a model who has done shoots for the likes of Vogue, Stella McCartney, Estee Lauder and Grazia.

News of Hansen’s illness has seen messages of support pouring in from the likes of Gary Lineker and Jamie Carragher. "Horrendous news," the former posted on X. "Thoughts are with Alan, Janet and all the family."

Known to his teammates as ‘Jockey’, Hansen made 620 appearances for Liverpool, winning eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and three League Cups in the process.

He began his career at Partick Thistle, where he made 86 appearances before making the move to Anfield in 1977. He was also capped 26 times by his country, and played in the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

After retiring from playing in 1991, Hansen became one of the most prominent pundits on UK TV. He regularly appeared on Match of the Day, where his most famous prediction came back to bite him in 1995 after he claimed “you can’t win anything with kids” when speaking about Manchester United. The Red Devils would go on to win the Premier League title that season.

He retired from punditry in May 2014, and has since lived a quiet life with his wife.
