USWNT's Alex Morgan explains how the 'unique situation' of Olympics postponement helped her return to form
As a first time mother, USWNT striker Alex Morgan is reveling in the small victories that came from waiting a year to go for gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
"I think I'm in a unique situation with the Olympics happening last year and me coming back from pregnancy in May, it was going to be a really tight turnaround and I was going to have to force my body to recover faster than I would have liked," the 31-year-old said to Yahoo Sports. "Thinking about the positives, I was really able to spend more time with my daughter and give my body the rest and recovery it needed from giving birth. All the uncertainty has really taught the team to take it one day at a time."
Playing in the UK vs. playing in the U.S.
In an effort to expedite her return to form, Morgan signed with English FA Women's Super League team Tottenham Hotspur in September 2020. After four appearances and two goals, Morgan returned stateside on December 21, 2020.
Though her tenure was short, the Orlando Pride star still had plenty to say when asked about the similarities and differences between playing in London compared to the States.
"Playing in the United States, I mean this is a country where you sometimes have to fly six hours for one match," she explained. "In England, the furthest match is maybe a four hour drive. You're not going to get these long plane rides that really test your body.
"I do think there's more parity among the U.S. teams. I think because women's soccer has more of a rich history in the United States, the quality is a little better. But, I was really impressed to see the resources being put into the Super League to ensure its growth. I want to see women's soccer continue to grow around the world, not just here or in England."
The significance of fans at live games
The absence of fans when live sports first returned was evident. With the help of Michelob ULTRA and a few famous friends, Morgan wants to offer supporters a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the return of live sports like an MVP by winning tickets to several major sporting events in 2022.
Joining her in The Greatest Comeback campaign include tennis legend Serena Williams, Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis, Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler, Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike and golfer Brooks Koepka.
"I follow the other five athletes religiously and it brings me joy to see their success," Morgan said. "To have fans actually come out and see us in a greater way than just turning on the television is also really exciting. So, I think that we can all relate to The Greatest Comeback campaign and wanting to spend time outdoors doing things you love with the people you love."
Morgan is back in action with the Pride Wednesday afternoon against last-ranked Kansas City NWSL.
