Alexander Gustafsson Injury Reportedly Jeopardizes UFC on Fuel TV 9 Main Event

Alexander Gustafsson Likely to Draw Anthony Johnson Next, Not UFC Title Shot

With less than a week to go until UFC on Fuel TV 9, the fight card's main event is in jeopardy.

An initial report by Sweden’s SVT Sport revealed that Alexander Gustafsson suffered a cut over his eye in training that may force him out of the April 6 fight with Gegard Mousasi. The two are scheduled to headline UFC on Fuel TV 9 in Stockholm.

That report has since been confirmed by Swedish MMA news site MMANYTT.se, citing reliable sources noting that the bout hinges on how deep the cut is and if the Swedish MMA Federation will authorize him to fight with the cut.

If Gustafsson were forced out of the fight, it would be a huge blow to the fight card. With less than a week until fight time, there is little time to find a suitable replacement, and the remaining card doesn’t have another bout that would typically be considered main event caliber.

The winner of the fight between Gustafsson (15-1) and Mousasi (33-3-2) was expected to be one of the next contenders for a shot at the UFC light heavyweight championship currently held by Jon Jones.

Gustafsson, in particular, had expected a win over Mousasi to put him alongside Lyoto Machida as the top considerations for the next shot at the belt.

UFC officials were unable to confirm or deny the reports to MMAWeekly.com at the time of publication.
