Alexis Mac Allister makes honest admission to Liverpool fans after Aston Villa collapse

Alexis Mac Allister has apologised for his performance in Liverpool's 3-3 draw with Aston Villa and admitted Monday night's result at Villa Park "feels like a defeat".

The Reds raced into a 3-1 lead early in the second half as an own-goal from Emi Martinez was followed by strikes from Cody Gakpo and Jarell Quansah either side of half-time.

However, after a quadruple change late in the second half and Mac Allister moving to the No.6 position as a result, Liverpool surrendered two points in the Midlands as Jhon Duran bagged a quickfire brace to rescue a vital point in Aston Villa's quest for Champions League qualification.

Mac Allister surrendered possession for Villa's equaliser in the first half as he tried an eye-of-the-needle pass to Gakpo before being caught in possession again late in the second half by Calum Chambers, who set up Duran to make it 3-2 at Villa Park.

In the aftermath of the Reds dropping two points, and with just two wins from their last five league outings, Mac Allister has revealed his disappointment with both his and Liverpool's performance on Monday night.

"Yesterday’s match feels like a defeat. When things aren’t going well, I am the first to criticise myself and I accept that; I realise it’s part of the game," wrote the Argentine on Instagram.

"Both the good and especially the challenging moments toughen us up and foster growth, both as a player and as a person. What matters most is how we respond to these experiences and the people who are there to support us.

"I have no doubt that this will make me stronger. Thank you for your constant support!"

Despite sitting top of the Premier League in April, Liverpool were unable to keep pace with Manchester City and Arsenal in the final weeks of the campaign as they dropped points against Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Everton and West Ham, results which ended their hopes of sending Jurgen Klopp off with league title in his final season as Reds boss.

However, the Reds will still celebrate the German's illustrious nine-year tenure as boss in his final game at Anfield on Sunday afternoon against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
