American Gods season 3 teases 'awakening' for Shadow in first trailer

From Digital Spy

American Gods season 3 is sending Ricky Whittle's Shadow Moon on a new adventure full of fresh faces, following the twist about Ian McShane's Odin/Mr Wednesday being his father.

Ahead of the third run dropping in 2021, this trailer gives us a look at some of the new characters, and a glimpse at how Shadow is handling the news about his parentage (not hugely well, it's gotta be said).

Wednesday is still hanging around, trying to get his son on side for whatever plans he's got in mind, and it all builds up to Shadow losing his rag and declaring that he IS a god. Basically, he know now he's got these incredible powers. So don't mess with him.

Unfortunately, the nature of the third season taking place in a new location with a mostly brand new cast of characters means that a lot of the cast from before aren't returning for this run, which apparently meant that some of the actors thought that they had been fired.

Neil Gaiman, who created the American Gods novel, explained that the show is just following the book, which replaces the supporting cast temporarily before bringing them back later to mix with the new characters, but laments that that aspect wasn't communicated very well.

"I think there was a lot of confusion," he said, "and I think it probably could have been handled much better, and that's including communicating with the cast over what was happening in this season, and what's going to be happening in season four.

"I'll put it this way: there are a lot of actors who seem to think that they've been fired because they weren't in season three, and you're sort of going, 'You're not in this season because stuff is happening in the season that you're not in. That doesn't mean you're not coming back.

American Gods will return to Starz in the US and Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
