Ander Herrera will leave Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the season, with strong speculation surrounding a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Spain midfielder, who joined the club under Louis van Gaal from Athletic Bilbao in 2014, announced the news on Saturday with an emotional message on Manchester United’s Twitter account.

The 29-year-old had long been in talks over his contract with United, but no agreement could be found.

Herrera made 132 Premier League appearances during five seasons at Old Trafford, scoring 20 goals, and helped win the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League during that time.

Several other players with contracts ending this season are expected to follow Herrera out the door as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revamps his squad.

It is not known whether Herrera will play any part in Sunday's final Premier League game against Cardiff at Old Trafford.
