Andriy Shevchenko hopes Italian fans in Rome will support Ukraine against England when the two countries meet in their Euro 2020 quarter-final on Saturday.

Shevchenko is a household name in Italy having spent eight years as a player at AC Milan, scoring 175 goals in 322 games and winning the Champions League in 2003.

England will be favourites on Saturday night in what will be their only match away from Wembley, but they will only have a small number of fans inside the Stadio Olympico because of the tough travel restrictions imposed by Italy on travellers from the UK.

Any travelling fans from England would need to isolate for five days before going, meaning only English expatriates already living in Italy or the Schengen group of European countries will be able to attend the match.

And Shevchenko hopes the Italian crowd will be backing Ukraine.

“I am proud of my lads, they gave it all,” Shevchenko told Sky Sport Italia after they beat Sweden 2-1 after extra time in Glasgow on Tuesday night.

“I dedicate this win to the people of Ukraine, we played with our hearts.

“I hope Italian fans will support us in Rome, England are a great team, it will be a difficult game.”
