Andy Murray vs Cameron Norrie LIVE: Western & Southern Open result as Norrie wins deciding set

Cameron Norrie secured his first career victory over Andy Murray as he battled from a set down to edge the all-British clash at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Murray had won their only previous meeting in 2019 and although Norrie came into the match the favourite following his run to the Wimbledon semi-finals, the 35-year-old looked superior after recovering from an opening break to take the first set.

Murray missed a chance to break Norrie early in the second after putting a volley at the net wide and the British No 1 began to take back control of the rallies. Norrie took his break point opportunities while Murray continued to pass up chances, leading to the deciding set where physicality proved decisive. Murray struggled with muscle cramps late in the third set while Norrie, one of the fittest players in the tour, continued to improve. Norrie broke Murray late in the third before serving out to take a 3-6 6-3 6-4 win in other two and a half hours.

“There was not much in it,” Norrie said after becoming the third British man after Tim Henman and Kyle Edmund to defeat Murray. “I think it came down to physicality. It didn’t help him that his match with Stan went long and in the end I just tried to keep it in play. It’s a massive win for me, beating Andy for the first time. It’s not the way I wanted to beat him but it’s nice to do it anyway.”

Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 4-6 Cameron Norrie - Game, set and match!

19:03 , Jamie Braidwood

Cameron Norrie, speaking to Amazon Prime: “There was not much in it. I think it came down to physicality. It didn’t help him that his match with Stan went long and he was struggling a bit towards the end. I just tried to keep it in play. For me, I’m still battling with the conditions and trying to get used to them. I got through with my attitude and tried to stay positive. Nothing was really working for me but I managed to find myself one set all and the decider was a battle. That’s how it rolls sometimes and hopefully I can keep improving.

“This match could be huge. I was looking slow and not moving well. It could have been down to nerves and feeling tired. It’s a massive win for me, beating Andy for the first time. We know each other’s games so well and it’s nice to beat him. It’s not the way I wanted to beat him but it’s nice to do it anyway.”

Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 4-6 Cameron Norrie - Game, set and match!

18:55 , Jamie Braidwood

A key moment in the match was the simple volley Murray missed at the start of the second set that would have given him the early break. He faced several other break point chances but couldn’t take any of them. In the end, Norrie’s physicality gave him the edge in the decider as Murray faded - but Norrie’s level improved as well.

Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 4-6 Cameron Norrie - Game, set and match!

18:52 , Jamie Braidwood

There are smiles on the faces of both players as they meet at the net. There’s even a laugh from Murray but afterwards he gets immediate attention from physio again. Murray can hardly walk out there and is grimacing as Norrie tidies up his things.

Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 4-6 Cameron Norrie - Game, set and match!

18:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray, still limping, plants a forehand onto the line to get to 15-30 as Norrie looks to serve this out. But Norrie responds in style with a sliding volley into the far corner, now getting himto match point. Murray attacks but Norrie moves too well at the back of the court, his hitting much improved from the opening stages. And that’s one of his points of the match. Norrie moves in and then finishes the match with a forehand winner into the corner.

Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 4-5 Cameron Norrie* - Norrie breaks!

18:44 , Jamie Braidwood

Now it’s Murray’s turn to face a tricky situation after being in a position of comfort. From 30-0, Norrie hauls himself back into it and then races to a drop shot to set up break point. But Murray finds the big serve, and then the putaway forehand winner.

On deuce, Murray first has to stretch out his leg - he hangs in the point and Norrie has the chance to put away the backhand pass, but it’s long! Murray, limping now, slumps a backhand into the net, before Norrie wins a lengthy rally when Murray nets on the backhand again.

It leads to a huge roar from Murray, as he also shakes out that right leg again. The first serve was an inch or two away from an ace. It’s instead followed by another missed serve. Double fault. Norrie breaks. And now Murray has the physio.

18:36 , Jamie Braidwood

Well, Norrie looked set for a comfortable hold at 40-0 but Murray, facing a free-hit, then produces a couple of lovely shots to get back to deuce. Out of nothing he faces an opportunity but the backhand return is slumped into the net and Norrie holds with an ace out wide. So as you were.

Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 4-3 Cameron Norrie*

18:30 , Jamie Braidwood

After that epic Norrie service game, Murray holds to love with two finishing aces. He’s still so annoyed about those misses, though, as he slaps his thighs during the changeover.

*Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 3-3 Cameron Norrie

18:23 , Jamie Braidwood

Norrie faces a pressure point at 15-30 but turns it on Murray as he approaches the net and asks his opponent to find the passing shot. Murray can’t, but then flips the tables by coming into the net at 40-30 to set up deuce. Murray grinds Norrie down from the baseline and that brings up break point! Huge chance for Murray here - especially on second serve - but he strings breaks as he looks to attack the second serve on the forehand! Unbelieveable. Back to deuce.

But now Norrie nets again, so another chance for Murray, and on another second serve. Murray steps in but nets on the backhand! Norrie then pulls off a stunning backhand pass down the line, his shot of the match, but can’t get the hold as he shovels a backhand long. Another chance for Murray, set up after a brilliant drop shot. The ball sits up for the forehand winner, but it’s put into the net from Murray!

And Norrie gets there in the end, after almost 10 minutes, with the ace out wide. Murray had three chances but due to bad luck, a poor return and an awful miss, this match remains level.

Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 3-2 Cameron Norrie*

18:17 , Jamie Braidwood

That’s better from the baseline from Murray, who finds a sweet backhand down the line and then cranks up the pressure on Norrie with his backhand. An ace gets him the hold, and there are signs that he has steadied a bit.

*Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 2-2 Cameron Norrie

18:13 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray looks exasperated as two consecutive forehand errors allow Norrie to hold. Murray only gave away seven points in the opening set but that figure doubled to 14 in the second.

Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 2-1 Cameron Norrie*

18:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray is boosted by his most efficient hold in a while. The serve seemed to slip slightly during the second set but he finds his mark out wide to edge in front again. The player who serves to start has won each of the opening two sets.

*Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 1-1 Cameron Norrie

18:06 , Jamie Braidwood

Norrie is playing so much more positively now andis getting his rewards now his forehand has warmed up. A crosscourt winner seals the quick hold and puts the pressure back on Murray now.

Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 1-0 Cameron Norrie*

18:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray opens with a double fault and Norrie increases the pressure with a winner to get to 0-30 early. Murray responds well with two positive points but another miss at the net brings up deuce as Norrie holds on. Norrie is then able to race to a drop shot but his lofted lob drifts long, and Murray gets on the board to start the third set.

*Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 Cameron Norrie - Norrie wins second set

17:52 , Jamie Braidwood

But how about this from Murray! A forehand winner on the opening point is followed by two more as he immediately gets a look at 0-40 on the Norrie serve. Norrie saves the first and Murray looks a little uneasily at his ankle after a slight wobble. There’s a shout of frustration between Norrie putting away the smash and then the ace out wide and as quickly as Murray raced to three break points, Norrie storms back to take the second set.

Andy Murray 6-3 3-5 Cameron Norrie* - Norrie breaks!

17:48 , Jamie Braidwood

Norrie punishes Murray as he attacks a short ball mid-court for a forehand winner. On deuce, Murray goes for the serve and volley but Norrie unleashes a dazzling return on the angle to set up break point.

And this time Norrie gets it. Norrie opened up the angle once more and Murray can only watch as his slices backhand drifts wide.

Norrie moves a game away from the second.

*Andy Murray 6-3 3-4 Cameron Norrie

17:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray smacks his thigh in frustration as he sees a chance disappear at 0-15. From there Norrie serves really well and swiftly gets the hold. He’s warming up now in this second set.

Andy Murray 6-3 3-3 Cameron Norrie*

17:36 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray is looking at another simple hold but Norrie mixes things up with a low slice to Murray’s backhand, which brings up deuce. Murray on the run then nets on the forehand out wide and Norrie gets break point, only his second of the match after the opening game, which Murray saves with a clutch serve up the middle.

But Murray nets again on the forehand, before Norrie makes a glaring miss on the second serve from Murray on break point. From there, Norrie goes long twice and Murray gets the hold after eight minutes.

*Andy Murray 6-3 2-3 Cameron Norrie

17:27 , Jamie Braidwood

Norrie goes big on a forehand from inside the baseline but chucks it wide and Murray gets a chance at 0-30. Murray, though, can’t make the most of the second serve at 0-30 and Norrie recovers with a backhand winner and drop shot. Murray is the one pressing for the break still.

Andy Murray 6-3 2-2 Cameron Norrie*

17:22 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray senses a lapse in focus creeping in as he is faced with 30-30 and then tries to fire himself up at the back of the court. It’s an untidy game but he gets away with it, sealed with an ace out wide.

*Andy Murray 6-3 1-2 Cameron Norrie

17:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray, though, gets back to business on his serve with an opening hold to love. That serve is working nicely so far and interestingly, Murray has won every match this season in which he has taken the first set.

Norrie reponds by holding to love, a much more straight forward service game to the previous one.

*Andy Murray 6-3 0-1 Cameron Norrie

17:09 , Jamie Braidwood

Norrie looks to pick up the speed of his forehand and blazes a winner to get to 40-15. But Murray hangs on, stretching for a volley at the net to get to deuce. Murray then finds a forehand winner of his own before Norrie’s misfires and is wide. An early break point chance for Murray, and what a chance to take it! He moves into the net but for the first time in the match his volley does not find its mark with the court open. Back to deuce - and quickly a hold for Norrie. Wow that was a big chance for the early break.

Andy Murray 6-3 Cameron Norrie

17:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Norrie takes a bathroom break as he looks to turn this around. Murray has looked comfortablle out there ever since the opening break.

Andy Murray 6-3 Cameron Norrie - Murray wins the first set

16:58 , Jamie Braidwood

With Murray serving for the set, Norrie finds his forehand with a crisp winner up the line. But Murray then finds his serve, and a kicker out wide brings up set point. Murray puts the forehand long and will face deuce as he tries to close this out.

And Murray gets there, just about. Norrie looked to close off the backhand pass up the line but puts his volley into the net! Murray takes the opener.

*Andy Murray 5-3 Cameron Norrie - Murray breaks!

16:52 , Jamie Braidwood

Now Murray skips a lovely backhand sliced volley onto the line to get to 0-30 on the Norrie serve. Norrie responds with a smash before Murray makes a couple of errors on the forehand side that I’m sure he’d love back.

But how about this from Murray: he spins a lovely backhand slice onto the line before putting away a stretching backhand crosscourt. A mistake from Norrie brings up break point and Murray takes it with a backhand pass!

Andy Murray 4-3 Cameron Norrie*

16:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Now Murray gets a quick hold as Norrie puts his serve out wide into the net. Another couple of tidy points in there from Murray, including a smart backhand volley at the net.

*Andy Murray 3-3 Cameron Norrie

16:42 , Jamie Braidwood

Norrie gets a very quick hold of serve to love. Norrie will look to have the physical edge on Murray - although he already has that against most players - and quick games like that certainly help put pressure on his opponent.

Andy Murray 3-2 Cameron Norrie*

16:38 , Jamie Braidwood

And now an very tidy hold from Murray. Norrie came close to setting up two breaks points at 15-30 but a nudged pick-up at the net drifted an inch or two wide. Murray wins the next couple and his forehand is working nicely in these early stages.

*Andy Murray 2-2 Cameron Norrie

16:33 , Jamie Braidwood

Another brilliant winner from Murray opens Norrie’s service game - this time an excellent backhand up the line. Norrie then puts an overhead smash into the net before a loose forehand drifts long of the baseline to bring up two break points for Murray.

A long rally ensues, 28 shots, and Murray can’t attack after it seemed he gained the upper hand, eventually putting a forehand. Norrie saves the second with a nice serve up the middle before he gets the hold with two well constructed points.

Andy Murray 2-1 Cameron Norrie*

16:26 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray then races to 40-0 with the help of an ace. Norrie hits back with a lovely drop shot, which Murray managed to reach, and then lob. But Murray can hold as Norrie’s return floats long.

*Andy Murray 1-1 Cameron Norrie - Murray breaks

16:22 , Jamie Braidwood

Murray steps in following a backhand down the line and puts away a nice volley, which is followed by the 35-year-old getting the better of an extended rally. Norrie shows quick hands at the net facing 15-30 and then puts away the forehand winner.

Murray then flashes a brilliant forehand winner cross-court, and a backhand into the net from Norrie brings up break point Murray. And a forehand into the net from Norrie at mid-court gets Murray back level.

Andy Murray 0-1 Cameron Norrie* - Norrie breaks

16:17 , Jamie Braidwood

Norrie wins the opening point with a shanked forehand lob that somehow drifts into court. Norrie holds up his racket as an apology but gets to 15-30 after a Murray double fault.

A further slice of luck from Norrie, this time clipping the net cord, helps to bring up break point and it swiftly taken as Murray leaves a forehand in the net.

Murray has a record of 8-2 against British players and has only ever been beaten by Tim Henman (2006) and Kyle Edmund (2018).

“Andy is a big inspiration for me but I’m going to put that to one side,” Norrie says, as the 26-year-old is shown stretching in the tunnel ahead of this afternoon’s match.

“Playing against Cam is not an easy match but if I play well and serve well I can win,” Murray adds. “These are the matches I want to be playing and these are the matches I want before New York.”

Murray shuts down the hype of an all-British clash but adds: “It makes it interesting, but for me Cam’s one of the best players in the world and I want to beat him because of that.”

Both are now out on court in Cincinnati.

Emma Raducanu will be on Centre Court following the conclusion of Murray and Norrie’s match as the 19-year-old takes on Victoria Azarenka. It comes less than 24 hours after her last match, which was a 6-4 6-0 win against Serena Williams.

Raducanu had spoken before the match of how getting the chance to play Serena before she retires at the US Open was a “gift” and she said afterwards she had been grateful for the opportunity.

“I think we all need to just honour Serena and her amazing career,” she said. “I’m so grateful for the experience of being able to play her and for our careers to cross over. Everything that she’s achieved is so inspirational and it was a true honour to share the court with her.”

Norrie was quick to praise the impact Murray has had on his career ahead of the pair’s second career meeting, with the 26-year-old revealing the help and advice the former world No 1 has offered to him throughout his journey to the top 20. Norrie started playing with Murray when he was close to the peak of his powers but enters today’s match as the favourite.

“It definitely took me a couple of years to catch up with my level,” Norrie told The Guardian. “For the most part, I was having to play at my best in practice to keep up with him. I think, probably nowadays it’s pretty even between us. We always have good practices.

“I’m always picking his brains on certain situations, what he thinks about certain players, how they play and tactics. Everything, really. He’s gone through a lot in the sport and he’s achieved almost everything so definitely a guy we’re lucky enough [to have] as a British player. To be practising with him a lot, to be spending time with him quite a lot, it’s pretty cool to pick his brain on a few things.”

There was quite a remarkable stat put to Murray following his win over Wawrinka that underlines how important a victory against Norrie would be this afternoon. Murray has a 13-3 record in first-round matches this season, but that record drops to 5-7 when he plays his second match of the event.

Murray replied: “Well, in some of the instances I’m playing against better players. I mean, that obviously is going to contribute to it a little bit. Again, that’s if you’re seeded in events or ranked higher, you potentially avoid playing better players earlier in tournaments. That’s an advantage.

“But, yeah, I mean, the reason I felt like I haven’t won as many of those matches as I would have liked this year is because I haven’t been playing well enough. Even in some of the first-round matches that I have got through, I haven’t necessarily played amazing tennis and then haven’t stepped it up the next match or, you know, when I have been playing against better opposition. Yeah, that’s what needs to change.

“There is evidence in there from -- I have talked about it a lot from the last 18 months and the players I have won against and had success against, that it is in there, but the consistency hasn’t been. Until that changes, yeah, it’s going to be difficult to have deep runs.”

There was some classic Murray action in his opening win over old rival Stan Wawrinka, with the 35-year-old battling through muscle cramps to win in three sets in Cincinnati.

“The court is pretty lively when the weather is like this. Physically I feel tired,” Murray explained. “I had some issues with cramp during the match, the same as Washington, so that is something I need to get on top of.

“I tried to take the ball on a little more and finish points at the net. I wasn’t that successful when I came up, but the intention was there. I was a little more offensive on the second-serve return. Last game I was just fighting, trying to find a way through.”

Murray, though, has the chance to build up to the US Open with a victory over the World No 11. Murray headed over to the US after Wimbledon with the goal of being amongst the seeded players for the final grand slam of the year, but it hasn’t quite worked out that way so far. Despite a good win over Stan Wawrinka in the opening round here, he was beaten in his first matches in Montreal and Washington - to Taylor Fritz and Mikael Ymer respectively. Murray, 47th in the world, needs a run here at the 1000 Series event to help his chances.

We’ve got a great match-up first on today in Cincinnati, and of two players at very different points in their careers. Norrie will face Murray for the first time since 2019 and cracking into the top 20. The 26-year-old’s journey to the Wimbledon semi-finals has been one of gradual improvement and a work ethic than undoubtedly would have been inspired by Murray’s own tireless graft. With the three-time grand slam champion winning their previous meeting in Beijing, a win for Norrie over his playing partner would also signify a signifcant step - even if rankings and form suggest it should not be much of a contest.

Good afternoon

Andy Murray faces Cameron Norrie at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati today with Emma Raducanu then in action on a busy day for the British contingent on Centre Court. With the US Open just around the corner, the ATP and WTA 1000 Series tournaments are the last opportunity to get up to speed on the hard courts before heading to Flushing Meadows and the second round has thrown up some intriguing matches.

First up, Murray takes Norrie for just the second time in a battle between the current and former British No 1. Murray battled through cramps to survive an epic duel with old rival Stan Wawrinka in his opening round while Norrie, fresh from reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals, also required three sets to take down Holger Rune. It is just the second time the players have met, with Murray edging the previous meeting in 2019, but Norrie has come a long way since.

Later, Raducanu will have another tough test in Cincinnati against the  former World No 1 Victoria Azarenka. Raducanu was in blistering form to thrash Serena Williams 6-4 6-0 their first and likely last career meeting before the 23-time grand slam champion’s retirement.  The British No 1 faces a short turnaround as she prepares to take on the former Australian Open champion Azarenka, with her match against Williams not finishing until late in the evening in Cincinnati.
