Andy Robertson is poised to be the first of Liverpool's international stars to return for pre-season training, following Scotland's exit at Euro 2024.

Scotland's journey in the tournament was cut short after a heart-wrenching last-minute 1-0 defeat to Hungary on Sunday, courtesy of Kevin Csoboth's 100th-minute goal. Robertson is among 10 Liverpool players who are participating in the continental tournament in Germany. Meanwhile, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Alisson Becker are representing their respective countries at Copa America.

As a result, all 14 internationals will miss the start of Liverpool's pre-season training under new head coach Arne Slot, which is set to commence at the AXA Training Centre in early July. Liverpool traditionally allows its internationals a three-week break following international duties, meaning Robertson is likely to return in mid-July.

Liverpool announced last week that it will host Sevilla at Anfield for its final pre-season friendly on August 11. This follows a pre-season tour of the United States where the team will face Real Betis, Arsenal, and Manchester United. Liverpool has yet to finalise its pre-season plans before heading across the pond.

Following Scotland's departure from Euro 2024 contention, an emotional Robertson expressed his deep regret to the fans in a candid post-match moment, not shying away from talk of international retirements.

"There's nothing really to say to be honest. We gave it everything," he told the BBC. "We knew we had to win this game, both teams had to win and they've hit us on the counter-attack.

"We’ve had our chances and I think it could have gone either way, but that's football - that's how it goes. It will take a long time to get over this one... We did go for it, but we got sucker-punched. A draw wasn't going to be enough realistically. Both teams had to go for it and unfortunately one of us had to lose."

Robertson was then asked if he can see Scotland continuing its development and qualifying for more international tournaments. The Scots also qualified for Euro 2020 after going more than two decades without appearing at a major tournament.

"That’s what we have to do but that’s not for tonight," replied Robertson. "That’s what we have to hope in the future but tonight, and for a long time, we have to get over this unfortunately. It's a tough one. With international football, sometimes you lose players and things like that. We’ll see what happens with that.

"Tonight is devastating, there’s no buttering it up. All the lads are absolutely gutted. It’s up to us to pick them up, but that only happens slowly but surely. What I will say is thank you to the country because we felt everybody behind us. We knew the excitement back home, sorry for letting you down."
