Liverpool left-back and Scotland captain Andy Robertson gave a brutally honest assessment of his team's performance after they were heavily beaten by Germany in the opening game at Euro 2024 in Munich.

Scotland was already two goals down thanks to strikes from Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala when Ryan Porteous was sent off and Kai Havertz made it three from the penalty spot. In the second half, substitute Niclas Fullkrug made it 4-0. An Antonio Rudiger own goal pulled back a consolation before former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can capped a superb night for the host nation.

"First half, we got it all wrong and we didn't show up," Robertson said live on ITV Sport post-match. "We left good players on the ball. Their game plan worked a million times better than ours. It wasn't because of the practice. It was because we didn't put it together. When big occasions come, you have to do that.

"Second half, when we were down to 10 men, the lads dug in really well. We lose a sloppy goal and we draw the second half, but it's no consolation. We are well-backed, we know that. We've got so many good supporters, but today was hugely disappointing. It's the first game and you are playing against the host nation but we have to bounce back quickly. There was a lot of things wrong today and we have to sort it because it's a quick turnaround until Tuesday.

"Maybe it's a reminder of how tough this tournament is. Last time, it was a lot different. This time, you're playing against world-class teams. They showed that today. They're big players turned up and made it really difficult for us. They had an answer for pretty much everything we did. Sometimes that happens but we didn't play to our maximum. We have five days to sort ourselves out and then it will be another tough test against Switzerland. We'll take tomorrow to be disappointed and then come Sunday, we have to go again."

Scotland could still qualify from its group because of the tournament being expanded. Up to three teams from each group will make it into the knockout phase so even one win could be enough. Hungary takes on Switzerland tomorrow and those are the two sides that Scotland will face next. Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is Hungary's star man while Xherdan Shaqiri, still only 32 and now playing in MLS, is in the Swiss team.

Liverpool.com says: It would be nice to see Robertson take Scotland into the knockout phase for the first time but he faces an uphill battle. There are some good players in the squad (John McGinn, for instance) but generally, there is plenty of work to be done based on this evidence. Germany was excellent but Scotland was very poor.
