Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has suffered heartbreak with Scotland at Euro 2024. The national captain has spoken to the media in the aftermath of a defeat to Hungary that consigned his country to an early flight home from Germany.

A key player for Scotland, Robertson nonetheless found himself withdrawn before full-time, as Steve Clarke threw on attackers to try and win the game. It was a curious, frenetic end, with both sides aware that a draw would likely lead to mutual elimination from the competition.

And he could only watch from the bench as Hungary, captained by Dominik Szoboszlai, scored in the 10th minute of additional time to keep its own hopes very much alive and condemn Scotland to elimination. His Liverpool teammate had earlier been in tears following an injury to international colleague Barnabas Varga, having rushed over to the stretcher team to get them to the incident more quickly.

Robertson did not shirk the responsibility for the defeat. Interviewed in the immediate aftermath of the game, he apologized to Scotland:

"Thank you to the country, we felt everyone behind us," Robertson told the BBC. "We felt the excitement back home. Sorry for letting you down.

"Tonight and for a long time we have to get over this, unfortunately. It's a tough one.

"With international football, sometimes you lose players and things like that, we'll see what happens with that. But yeah, tonight's devastating, there's no buttering it up. All the lads are absolutely gutted, but it's up to us to pick them up."

Robertson made some important defensive interventions against Hungary, but struggled to have much of an attacking influence from his left-back base, despite positioning himself high up the pitch. Scotland's first shot of any description did not come until the second half, as it failed to capitalize on having the lion's share of possession.

It fell to Kevin Csoboth to score the dramatic late winner, although Scotland had earlier seen a convincing penalty shout waved away, also coming close with chances of its own in the exciting denouement. In excellent news, Varga is conscious and in a stable condition in hospital following his collision with Angus Gunn.

Liverpool.com says: At least Arne Slot will get Robertson back more quickly. But we were rooting for every Liverpool player at the tournament, and it's a same to see Scotland's journey end so soon.
