Tottenham defender Djed Spence is in talks to join Genoa on a permanent transfer, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. The 23-year-old has spent the last six months on loan at the Italian club after a failed temporary spell at Championship side Leeds United was cut short.

In the summer of 2022, Spence signed for Spurs in a £20million deal from Middlesbrough but he has made just six appearances for the club. The arrival of Ange Postecoglou looked set to be a second chance for Spence but he was very quickly isolated from training sessions in pre-season.

Following the termination of his loan spell at Elland Road, the Lilywhites looked for an immediate solution which arrived in the form of Genoa. From 18 Serie A games, Spence played a role in 16 of those with Genoa clearly impressed enough to want him back on a permanent basis.

On Monday, it was revealed that Genoa have approached Tottenham to sign Spence on permanent deal. As per Romano, negotiations are ongoing with the price looking likely to be a crucial part of whether or not the deal goes through but if an agreement is reached, a significant windfall could be on the cards for Spurs and Postecoglou.

Considering this update, there looks to be no way back for Spence in north London as he opened on where it went wrong. "This is football, I couldn’t explain the reasons," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"What’s certain is that when you don’t play it’s difficult to demonstrate your value. There’s no point in asking too many questions. But I believe that even in difficulty there’s always something to learn. Whichever coach you are, it makes you richer inside.”

Spence would be Tottenham's first senior exit of the summer following the loan return of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig. The Germany international spent the final six months of the last campaign at Spurs and he clearly did enough to impress Postecoglou in that time.
