Tottenham's association with Tanguy Ndombele is finally over following a mostly disastrous five years. The France international arrived from Lyon in a club-record £63million deal and regularly showed glimpses of ability but ultimately he did not live up to the hype having also failed to impress several managers.

Under Jose Mourinho in the 2020/21 season, Ndombele put in numerous excellent performances but the Portuguese's' departure meant Ndombele would yet again have to put in the hard yards to prove his worth. Nuno Espirito Santo was not the biggest fan of the 27-year-old and his actions under Antonio Conte spelled the end of his tenure in north London.

During the FA Cup clash against Morecambe, with Spurs a goal down, Ndombele trudged off the pitch to mountains of abuse. Having been in the stands at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for that moment, it was very clear there would be no way back in the eyes of match-going fans for Ndombele.

Loan spells back at his former club and Galatasaray did not help revive his career with numerous reports throughout his spell at the latter claiming the Turkish side wanted to terminate his loan early. Though Ndombele's contract does not expire until 2025, Spurs have announced he has departed one year early.

On X, a club statement read: "The Club can confirm the departure of Tanguy Ndombele following the mutual termination of his contract, effective from 30 June, upon the conclusion of his current loan spell. Wishing you all the best for the future, Tanguy [white heart]."

In the wake of his exit being officially confirmed, it should absolutely serve as a transfer reminder to Ange Postecoglou and Johan Lange to be very careful in future transfer dealings. That £63million fee remains as the club's biggest transfer with the likes of Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, acquired for a total of £106million, examples of shrewd recruitment.

Considering how Postecoglou has already navigated his first two transfer windows in north London, it is very likely he acutely aware of how to make smart decisions. The club's strong financial position is also something to note with it likely the Lilywhites are keen to maintain that and thus will not make any marquee signings.

Following on from proof of those smart decisions, with Timo Werner joining the club on another loan spell, Spurs are yet to formalise interest in any targets. However, in terms of outgoings, Emerson Royal looks set to join Ndombele in leaving with Djed Spence also in talks to join Genoa.
