Anne Williams Golf Day returns to raise money for Sefton Baby Baskets

The Anne Williams Memorial Golf Day returns for its 12th year on Friday, July 5 as amateur golfers are set to tee off in the name of charity.

The event pays tribute to Anne Williams, a mother from Formby who campaigned for years for her 15-year-old son Kevin and the 97 supporters who lost their lives in the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster.

Anne passed away in 2013 following a battle with cancer. The event raises money for small Merseyside charities, with a different one being picked each year.

This year’s charity is Sefton Baby Baskets, an organization which aims to support struggling families with new baby essentials by providing a Moses basket full of everything they may need. Organiser Steve Martin believes this was the perfect charity to choose.

He told The Anfield Wrap: “We go to day-to-day people who make massive differences in their communities and the people that they support.

“This year’s charity, Sefton Baby Baskets; we have a checklist that we do when we select our charities. Not only did they tick the boxes that we have, they’ve ticked boxes we didn’t know existed.

“They’re so small and do such an amazing job to help families, struggling parents primarily in Liverpool, but if they also got a case from someone somewhere else and they’re willing to help them, they would.

“Their objective is to provide families, mothers, and fathers with baby baskets of essentials for that newborn baby. This charity is so humble, so small, and it’s everything that we want to support.”

The golfers will be hoping to be awarded the prestigious Anne Williams shield; however, a variety of different prizes will be won throughout the day.

Only 12 years in, the event has grown massively since it was first created via a Liverpool supporters forum.

He said: “First year we had 28 players, second hand trophies, boxes of balls as prizes, to what we’ve built today is just beyond what anyone could have imagined.

“We have supporters from all over the world, professional golfers; we’ve had Tyrrel Hatton. Wayne Scholes (Owner Red Touch Media) is our ambassador for the day.

“We have support from every corner of the UK, from the most prestigious golf courses to the fella who put a fiver in the PayPal the other day.

“Whatever we get in goes to amazing charities in our city that we are truly honoured to support all in the memory of Anne.”
