Anthony Gordon was so enthused by the prospect of moving to Liverpool that he openly discussed the potential transfer within the England camp at Euro 2024. But it now looks more complicated than ever to strike a deal.

According to the Telegraph, Gordon's agent "pushed hard" for a move to Liverpool right up until the June 30 deadline, after which point deals are included in the new accounting period. But with no agreement secured in that timeframe, Newcastle no longer has a pressing motivation to sell, which will make negotiations fraught if the Reds try to revive a transfer now.

The factor which could yet make a difference is Gordon's state of mind, amid claims his head has been turned. And if his actions with England at Euro 2024 are anything to go by, there could be something in it.

Newcastle ultimately struck other deals by close of play on June 30, sending Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton. Those sales rank first and third on the list of the club's all-time record departures — split by Andy Carroll's move to Liverpool.

One of the club's most loss-making years has also now dropped off the rolling three-year accounting period, giving Newcastle some more leeway in the market. But Football Insider claims it would still sell Gordon for the right price.

And the Telegraph report goes into some more details about what went on behind the scenes. It claims that conversations took place between the clubs, and that Gordon spoke about the possible move to England colleagues.

However, it also says that Liverpool only ever showed "lukewarm" interest, failing to ever make a concrete bid. Informal proposals were "so low they would not have made a meaningful contribution to the PSR deficit."

This was always likely to be a sticking point. Having only signed Gordon from Everton 18 months ago, Newcastle has not "booked" the majority of the sum it paid to purchase him, and the outstanding amount would have been subtracted from any sale price.

Liverpool may well have been making perfectly reasonable proposals. But from a Newcastle perspective, a sale needed to be massive in order to make the difference from a PSR point of view.

Contrary to the Football Insider story, it's said that Newcastle will in fact not sell Gordon this summer, although it "remains to be seen" if Liverpool will come in again. If nothing else, any future negotiations can focus solely on the two sides' valuations of the player, without any of these PSR considerations — but with the "desperation" at St James' Park having abated, a transfer will be trickier than ever.

Liverpool.com says: Perhaps the clinching factor will be Gordon's attitude towards signing a new deal. It's believed that his contract has just two years left to run, and if he has no intention of renewing, then Newcastle might need to reconsider selling to Liverpool.

But it's hard not to feel like the window for a deal this summer was before June 30. It's one to watch, certainly, but Gordon's enthusiasm alone will not be enough to force through a move to Liverpool.
