A look through England’s Euro 2024 squad and you’ll see a number of names that Liverpool have been linked with in the past.

Jude Bellingham is perhaps the most obvious one, given that he had been a long-term Reds target, only for the club to walk away from a move for the then Borussia Dortmund star when realising it would not be feasible in April 2023. And after such a decision, Conor Gallagher was initially on the club’s’ longlist of potential midfield targets last year.

Liverpool were regularly linked with Bukayo Saka following his breakthrough 2019/20 season with Arsenal, only for him to sign a new long-term contract at the end of that campaign. Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen has regularly been touted as a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah in the past when the Egyptian’s future looked uncertain, though now 27 years old, such talk has since quietened.

More recently, links with Ollie Watkins have been dismissed, while the Reds have also been loosely linked with the likes of Crystal Palace pair Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton. Yet the speculation that has been most rife instead concerns their Eagles team-mate, Marc Guehi, along with Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

Liverpool are in the market for a new centre-back this summer, following Joel Matip’s departure at the end of his contract, with Guehi one of a number of defenders who continues to be linked with a move to Anfield as a result. Out of contract in 2026, the Eagles are aware of the possibility that they might struggle to retain his services after Euro 2024 and are reportedly bracing themselves for offers.

Meanwhile, despite being a former Everton player, Gordon has made no secret of his Reds allegiances having grown up as a boyhood Liverpool supporter. This has only further fuelled speculation that he could one day trade Newcastle United for Anfield, having first been linked with the club earlier this summer.

While there are question marks regarding the long-term futures of Reds trio Salah, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, a move for Gordon admittedly looks unlikely at this time.

And when discussing speculation regarding his fellow Liverpool-linked England team-mate Guehi, the 23-year-old has perhaps dropped a subtle hint that he indeed intends to stay put at Newcastle United for the forthcoming season.

“I haven’t actually seen the Newcastle links, but it goes without saying I’d absolutely love him to come because he’s a top player and he’d make us a better team,” he told talkSPORT.

“He’s top, he’s such a good player and I was glad the nation got to see him shine on that stage because he’s such a lovely guy and he deserves what’s coming to him.”

While such comments perhaps hint that Guehi could well move on this summer, they also hint at Gordon considering his future, in the short-term at least, at St. James’ Park.

Gordon and Guehi were briefly England Under-21s team-mates prior to the Newcastle winger joining the Palace centre-back in the senior squad when handed his first call-up by Gareth Southgate back in March.

Now both representing their country at the European Championships, only time will tell if Gordon is to get his wish and they ever become team-mates at club-level - be it at Newcastle, one day at Liverpool or elsewhere.
