Newcastle United have confirmed the appointment of Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director, whose first task will likely be assessing Anthony Gordon's future at the club.

Gordon was recently offered to Liverpool as the Magpies looked to raise funds prior to the PSR deadline of June 30, though a deal failed to materialise following a request for Jarell Quansah to head in the opposite direction as part of this transfer agreement.

Mitchell will now head up Newcastle's sporting department after Dan Ashworth's move to Manchester United and is no stranger to the Premier League after previously working at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.

The 42-year-old was last year linked with taking on this role at Liverpool after Julian Ward's exit was confirmed, though the ECHO reported Mitchell was not in the running despite being backed to move to Merseyside.

Mitchell was credited with deals for Toby Alderweireld and Sadio Mane at Southampton and played a key part in Tottenham signing the likes of Dele Alli and Heung-min Son. Speaking to the Athletic in 2022, he revealed he would one day be open to returning to the Premier League.

"Everything that is currently being said in the press isn’t necessarily true," he said of links to Liverpool and Manchester United. "My responsibility is to concentrate on Monaco and I take that very seriously. Whether or not I’m appreciated, I have always put the interests of the club above my own. I am going to continue to do that. Life is a question of timing. You can never say never, but I want to leave this project on a solid footing."

It remains to be seen whether Mitchell will look to keep Gordon at St James' Park this summer or look to sanction to a transfer for the England international, who Liverpool are admirers of. The future of Luis Diaz could depend on whether the Reds take their appreciation for the player to the next level.
