Liverpool appears to have no problem complying with the Premier League’s rules on profit and sustainability (PSR). This is far from the case at other clubs, a fact from which the Reds may be able to take advantage.

Any time you log on to social media, you will quickly find fans of other Premier League teams bemoaning the fact their club is not permitted to post limitless losses in pursuit of success. Yet if football clubs were run like business in the real world, many would have already gone under thanks to reckless transfer spending.

Despite being owned by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, Newcastle is struggling to meet PSR requirements. The Athletic has been reporting on the activity behind the scenes at the club, with comments on Anthony Gordon which are certain to be of interest to Liverpool and its supporters.

It is claimed that Newcastle spent big money on transfers when in full knowledge of potential issues lying in wait, with focus put on the deals for Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali in particular.

And it is this behavior which has led Newcastle to need to sell players urgently. The recently returned Michael Edwards was a master of exploiting inefficiencies elsewhere in the transfer market, when buying or selling, in his previous time with Liverpool. The Magpies’ weakness enabled the Reds to make a play for Gordon.

Liverpool reportedly made a 'tentative' enquiry to Newcastle, who proposed that Jarell Quansah would head in the opposite direction. It is claimed that this was a non-starter for Liverpool, with Quansah held in high regard at Anfield.

However the report states that some Newcastle figures 'fear' that Gordon's head may have already been turned by Liverpool and he would be open to a return to Merseyside, 18 months after leaving Everton.

It would hardly be a shock if Gordon’s head has “been turned.” He grew up in Liverpool, has spoken of his admiration for the likes of Steven Gerrard and Mohamed Salah, is close mates with Curtis Jones and has laid out his ambition to reach the very pinnacle of the sport. With Newcastle out of Europe and needing to raise funds while the Reds will be returning to the Champions League under Arne Slot, a lot of stars could very quickly align to reignite this seemingly dead transfer.

Liverpool.com says: Football is a dog-eat-dog world. Newcastle being weakened would help Liverpool's chances of success, and if it can buy one of the Magpies' best players, all the better.
