Antoine Griezmann was accused of disrespecting Croatia after celebrating his goal with a 'Take the L' dance from the popular video game Fortnite.

The multi-player online game has taken the world by storm in recent months, with a whole host of footballers including Harry Kane and Dele Alli admitting they have been playing the game to unwind in between World Cup matches.

Griezmann, who has been celebrating goals with the dance from the video game since May, gave the celebration an airing on the biggest stage in France's World Cup final against Croatia.

France were awarded a penalty after VAR called on referee Nestor Pitana to review his decision not to award a spot-kick after Griezmann's corner struck Ivan Perisic on the arm in the area.

After sending Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subašić the wrong way, the France striker wheeled away holding making an 'L' for loser with his hand.

"Griezmann doing the Fortnite L celebration in a World Cup final is the most disgusting thing you’ll ever see," said one fan.

"I don't mind Griezmann celebrating with a Fortnite dance, I think there's many crazy celebrations and it's just something he loves so let him," replied another Twitter user. "However why use the dance that literally calls the opponent a loser? Never thought about that but it's a s***** thing to do," she added.

ITV pundit Roy Keane called the decision to award the controversial penalty 'disgusting'.

"That decision disgusts me, absolutely disgusts me," said Keane at half-time. "Croatia players deserve better than that. I'm fuming. Disgraceful decision."

The dance is a popular celebration when a player kills another competitor in the co-op sandbox survival video game. "It's a ridiculous decision," said Alan Shearer during the BBC's half-time analysis of the incident. "No way was it a penalty."

"It's too close for him to react. He's not deliberately tried to handle the ball in my opinion. He can't be sure, he can't," added Rio Ferdinand.

The goal was Griezmann's fourth at the 2018 World Cup, some way behind Just Fontaine's 13 goals at the 1958 tournament.
