Manchester United’s hopes of signing Antoine Griezmann have been dealt a blow after the Court of Abritration for Sport upheld Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban.

The LaLiga giants were placed under embargo last year due to irregularities in the signing of foreign players under the age of 18.

Diego Simeone’s side failed with one appeal to FIFA and have now lost all hope of overturning the decision following the CAS’ ruling.

It means Atletico cannot register any new players until January and places greater emphasis on the need to keep the current squad together.

Griezmann has long been linked with a move to Jose Mourinho’s side and the Frenchman has given mixed messages to reports linking him to United.

“My future will be decided this summer,” Griezmann told Spanish television on Wednesday in his latest grilling over his future.

“It is in the hands of the club president. My agents have spoken with Atletico, we will see what happens.”

Griezmann has been a key figure for Atletico Madrid in recent seasons and the club are desperate to keep hold of the superstar forward.

However, the player’s contract contains a €100million release clause, which means Atleti would be powerless to prevent him joining the Old Trafford club if Mourinho sanctions a bid of at least this value once the transfer window opens.

Griezmann would still need to agree personal terms and pass a medical to seal the deal but money is no object at United.

Champions League football qualification was secured last term to further entice the 26-year-old to Manchester to link up with his pal Paul Pogba.
