Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata declared his side’s 2-1 Champions win against Atletico Madrid was a significant moment in their season, after Michy Batshuayi dramatic 94th minute winner sparked wild scenes of celebrations for the Premier League champions.

Batshuayi’s last gasp goal inflicted a dramatic first defeat for Atletico at their new Wanda Metropolitano, with Morata’s opening equalizing goal in the game paving the way for a win that sent Antonio Conte’s side to the top of Group C.

“It is a very important win for us. It was a big test,” Morata told BT Sport. “Atletico Madrid were in the Champions League final a few years ago and now we can go home relaxed and put this mentality into the Premier League. Chelsea boss Conte had just about calmed down after his extravagant celebrations to greet his side’s winning goal, as he offered these calm reflections.

“Our performance was very good so I am very pleased for my players,” stated the Italian. “When you go 1-0 down it’s very difficult to come back but we continued to play very well in the second-half and concentrated well.

“We deserved to win. I think we prepared for the game very well. My players showed me great desire, will and concentration. They showed we deserved to play these types of games.”

Conte also lavished praise on the magnificent Hazard, who confirmed his early season injury worry is now behind him.

“We must be very happy because Eden Hazard’s performance was amazing and it was the first big game for him after his injury.

“His answer was fantastic and positive. He had a great link with Alvaro Morata and I am happy for Michy Batshuayi, but also Willian played very well.”
