Jofra Archer has not been named in England’s provisional 15 man squad for the Cricket World Cup this summer, with no changes from the team that drew against the West Indies in the ODI series earlier in 2019.

However the Archer, who was born in Barbados but due to a change in selection rules now qualifies for England, will feature in the ODI series against Pakistan which will serve as a warm up for the World Cup.

There had been speculation that the 24-year-old might pick up his first cap having qualified for the team in March. Should he impress during the warm up games, he stands a chance of being a late call up, with changes possible until 23 May.

"The selection panel has been impressed with Jofra Archer's performances in domestic and franchise cricket," said national selector Ed Smith.

"He is a very talented and exciting cricketer."

Archer, who’s currently playing in the Indian Premier League, has been singled out as one of the most exciting limited-overs players in the game thanks to his 90mph bowling paired with strong performances in the field and at the crease.

He’ll be joined by his Sussex team mate Chris Jordan, who returns to the ODI set up for the first time since 2016 having impressed selectors with his form in the T20 format.

“Chris Jordan, a regular in IT20 squads over the past few years, has continued to develop as a cricketer – as we saw in the IT20s in the West Indies. He fully deserves his return to the ODI squad” said Smith.

Chris Woakes, who has made the squad said the selection of Archer would be “morally unfair”.

But he conceded in an interview with the BBC that the nature of the sport means that there will always be someone knocking on the door for selection.
