Argentina vs England - LIVE!

England are celebrating achieving a third-place finish at the Rugby World Cup. Steve Borthwick's side outlasted Argentina in an entertaining and nervy bronze medal match in Paris on Friday night, getting 16 points from the boot of Owen Farrell to bounce back from the disappointment of last weekend's agonising last-gasp semi-final defeat by defending champions South Africa.

Ben Earl scored his first England try after a dominant start to proceedings, but the Pumas fought back through reliable goal-kicker Emiliano Boffelli and got a try of their own before half-time through Tomas Cubelli. Santiago Carreras and Theo Dan then both scored quick-fire tries during a breathless start to the second half, with more penalties exchanged before a crucial late miss from Nicolas Sanchez.

While not where England wanted to finish up after making it through to the last four, ending the tournament in third spot represents enormous and swift progress under Borthwick after their awful build-up to the World Cup, offering a real platform for the future. Follow Argentina vs England reaction live below, with expert analysis from Standard Sport's Nick Purewal at the Stade de France.

Some great camaraderie on display from the England players after the full-time whistle and such an exhausting tournament.

It's now time for them to go and collect their bronze medals and shake hands with World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont on a plinth erected in the middle of the pitch.

Some tears from the Argentina players.

Full-time

A penalty ends Argentina's hopes of a last-gasp comeback and the full-time whistle sounds!

England hold on to win the bronze final and claim third place at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Not where they wanted to end up after that agonising late semi-final defeat by South Africa, but it's still an incredible achievement from Steve Borthwick's side given their dismal build-up to the tournament and lowly expectations.

A real platform to build on moving forward.

Argentina 23-26 England

21:58 , George Flood

80 mins: Credit to England for managing to keep hold of this ball despite being skewered at another scrum.

They are keeping it tight through the forwards and running down the clock.

Argentina desperate to get it back but they are out of time.

Argentina 23-26 England

21:56 , George Flood

79 mins: Referee Nic Berry wants to check several things from that passage of play so there's a lengthy stoppage that sucks a bit of the drama out of this lively, tense finish.

Farrell is down for England after copping a forearm.

Berry also wants to look at a potential knock-on and probably that Ford/Carreras collision.

In the end there's nothing given. It was a Pumas knock-on and we go back for another England scrum.

Time is almost up for Argentina.

Argentina 23-26 England

21:53 , George Flood

79 mins: England win it under big pressure at the scrum and boom clear, but Argentina attack with menace from deep!

Carreras powers down the left wing and smashes into Ford, who does enough to crucially stop the speedy Newcastle wing in his tracks

Argentina 23-26 England

21:52 , George Flood

77 mins: Argentina are pinged for an accidental offside and England have the put-in at the scrum.

Another massive set-piece in the context of this game.

Sanchez hooks a penalty that would have drawn the game level but Argentina go straight back on the attack.

England somehow hold on through the phases and force a Pumas knock-on.

Argentina 23-26 England

21:48 , George Flood

76 mins: Sanchez hooks the kick left!

Oh, what a miss.

A huge reprieve for England.

Is there enough time left for the Pumas to come again?

They have the ball and are flooding back forward...

Argentina 23-26 England

21:47 , George Flood

75 mins: Argentina keep it and end up attacking with a penalty advantage, working the ball wonderfully out wide to Mateo Carreras.

The Newcastle wing bounces Smith - as he did to Farrell earlier - before being knocked down by Earl.

He wants the tackle to be looked at, but his appeals are waved away.

Argentina will kick to level this game. Is extra-time approaching?!

Argentina 23-26 England

21:45 , George Flood

74 mins: Argentina have the put-in at a scrum midway inside the England half after that Lawrence intervention.

Underhill will have to be patched up here first following a head wound.

This is a huge scrum for England...

Argentina 23-26 England

21:44 , George Flood

72 mins: England under pressure with time ticking away as Argentina have a scrum following Ludlam's illegal work at the maul.

The Red Rose set-piece creaks but Argentina are thwarted by a great read from Lawrence, who flies out of the defensive line to disrupt Sanchez.

Into the final 10 minutes and a grandstand finish awaits to this third-place play-off...

And here was the blistering response from Dan to atone for his crucial missed tackle...

Argentina 23-26 England

A look back at that sublime Santiago Carreras try...

PENALTY! Argentina 23-26 England | Nicolas Sanchez 68'

21:38 , George Flood

68 mins: England are caught offside to give Argentina a decision to make with a six-point deficit heading into the final 10 minutes.

They opt for an easy kick in front of the posts, replacement fly-half Sanchez bringing them within three once more.

We're on for another nail-biting finish in Paris.

Argentina 20-26 England

21:36 , George Flood

66 mins: Arundell now makes way for Lawrence. Such a disappointing night for the former London Irish flyer.

Bello, Sclavi and Alemanno come into the Pumas pack.

PENALTY! Argentina 20-26 England | Owen Farrell 65'

21:32 , George Flood

65 mins: The England lead is back up to six points with 15 minutes to go.

Farrell drills another straightforward penalty after two strong scrums - Rodd in particular impressing there.

Farrell is now the highest points scorer at this World Cup, overtaking France's full-back goal-kicker Thomas Ramos.

Argentina 20-23 England

21:30 , George Flood

60 mins: Into the final quarter of this bronze medal game and there hasn't really been any fluency from either side since that crazy start to the second half.

It's all very predictable from England at the moment. They are carrying hard into contact but Argentina's defence will be only too happy with that approach.

They need to use these three playmakers in more clever fashion and get the likes of Arundell involved off the wing. He's been a complete non-factor so far.

Despite their great tournament, England's attack is still not anywhere close to where it needs to be in general.

Argentina 20-23 England

21:26 , George Flood

56 mins: A swap at hooker for the Pumas as London Irish legend Creevy, 38, replaces skipper Montoya.

Sanchez is also on for Santiago Carreras at fly-half.

Argentina 20-23 England

21:25 , George Flood

55 mins: George for Dan at hooker in England's latest change.

Ford has also replaced Tuilagi, who looked to have hurt himself in a tackle a short while ago.

So England now have three natural fly-halves on the pitch in Farrell, Ford and Smith.

Farrell moves to 12 with Ford coming in at 10. Smith still at full-back, where he isn't having a great evening it must be said.

Argentina 20-23 England

21:22 , George Flood

55 mins: Momentum is quickly swinging back and forth at the Stade de France.

Earl gets over the ball for the turnover penalty at the breakdown, but Argentina quickly have a penalty of their own... touch missed!

Cheika is not a happy man for a few reasons up in that coaching box.

Argentina 20-23 England

21:19 , George Flood

51 mins: Moroni and Bruni have replaced Cinti and Isa for Argentina.

Bazan Velez is also on for try-scorer Cubelli at scrum-half.

Plenty of early second-half changes from England, with Youngs, Genge, Stuart and Curry replaced by Care, Rodd, Cole and Ludlam.

Youngs' 127th and final international appearance comes to an end.

PENALTY! Argentina 20-23 England | Emiliano Boffelli 49'

21:16 , George Flood

49 mins: England are whistled for offside and the unerringly accurate Boffelli knocks over the penalty from long range.

Pumas back within three points with half an hour still to play in Paris.

Argentina 17-23 England

21:12 , George Flood

Standard Sport's Nick Purewal at the Stade de France

A madcap start to the second half saw Theo Dan miss a tackle on Santiago Carreras to leak a poor try – then claim immediate revenge and redemption.

Dan charged down Carreras straight after the restart, and powered in for a score of his own.

Farrell’s conversion has England now leading 23-17.

TRY! Argentina 17-23 England | Theo Dan 44'

21:09 , George Flood

44 mins: That's certainly one way to bounce back swiftly from young Saracens hooker Dan, who really should have made that tackle on Carreras.

Now he charges down the Pumas fly-half and scoops up the loose ball to hit straight back!

Farrell converts and England are back in front by six points.

A breathless start to his second half at the Stade de France.

TRY! Argentina 17-16 England | Santiago Carreras 42'

21:07 , George Flood

42 mins: What a start to this second half from the Pumas, who now lead England in Paris!

It's a wonderful dummy, step and weaving run from Gloucester fly-half Carreras, who slips the tackle of Dan before also brushing off the attempted tackles of Genge, Farrell and finally Smith before touching down.

Superb stuff and Boffelli converts to put Argentina in front. England's lead has evaporated in rather worrying fashion.

Argentina 10-16 England

Back underway at the Stade de France as Argentina kick off.

No changes from either coach at the interval.

Will England go on to seal third place at this World Cup?

Argentina 10-16 England

20:59 , George Flood

Here's that Cubelli try.

Having seen it again, that was definitely a forward pass from Cinti in the build-up.

How was that missed by the TMO?!

But Argentina won't care!

Argentina 10-16 England

Standard Sport's Nick Purewal at the Stade de France

England take a 16-10 lead into half-time, having started in fine fashion but slipping off afterwards.

A tired performance is completely reasonable given last weekend’s exploits and defeat.

But now they need to step it up after the break to get this job done.

They are the more threatening team overall but have to tidy up their fundamentals.

Argentina 10-16 England

20:50 , George Flood

Half-time

England push for more points before the break, including a return of the dummy drop goal, but Argentina refuse to wilt this time despite Smith's best efforts and a couple of promising scrums.

They boom the ball into touch after the mark and Nic Berry blows the half-time whistle.

Argentina 10-16 England

20:46 , George Flood

Standard Sport's Nick Purewal at the Stade de France

Argentina power to a try through Tomas Cubelli, with Boffelli converting to cut the England lead to six points.

That score can be traced all the way back to an overhit Ben Youngs box kick.

All England’s early momentum dissipated when the Pumas pounced on that loose strike, and their score was reasonable reward for their resurgence.

TRY! Argentina 10-16 England | Tomas Cubelli 36'

20:43 , George Flood

36 mins: Just what the Pumas needed!

They drive forward relentlessly with smart, quick, heavy carries and some dynamic passes, not giving England's defensive line a moment to settle.

Scrum-half Cubelli ends up diving over from close range and Boffelli's conversion makes it a six-point game with the interval fast approaching.

England were exposed defensively there, but one of those passes - from outside centre Cinti out to full-back Mallia - looked suspiciously forward.

There is a scrambled check before the kick as the shot clock is reset, but the try stands.

Borthwick might have something to say about that afterwards...

Argentina 3-16 England

Here's that earlier try from Ben Earl, his first for England...

Argentina 3-16 England

20:40 , George Flood

32 mins: That's what England want to see from Tuilagi - an explosive carry has the Pumas defence in a panic.

There's then a furious battle at the breakdown, with both sides off their feet before Argentina are whistled by referee Nic Berry.

England kick for the lineout.

PENALTY! Argentina 3-16 England | Owen Farrell 30'

20:38 , George Flood

30 mins: Underhill and Curry combine to absolutely scythe down Kremer, who felt the full force of that combo.

The hard-hitting flanker duo previously dubbed the 'Kamikaze Kids' are certainly enjoying their reunion so far tonight.

England have another penalty that is easily slotted over by Farrell. The lead is back up to 13 with 10 minutes remaining until half-time.

Argentina 3-13 England

20:34 , George Flood

27 mins: Argentina had too many men at the lineout in a frustrating error that will infuriate Michael Cheika.

Full-back Mallia then cleans up effectively and importantly after probing work from Farrell as England look to get back in the attacking groove and involve Tuilagi.

The Pumas then rouse themselves to pick off an England lineout.

Itoje's knock-on gives them the put-in at the scrum.

Argentina 3-13 England

20:31 , George Flood

Standard Sport's Nick Purewal at the Stade de France

Marcus Smith is having a tricky time under the high ball so far. Out of position to fail to claim one, the next time he fielded the hoist only to concede a penalty at the ruck.

A Mexican Wave as early as 24 minutes tells the entire story of the attitude towards the third-place play-off.

The rugby is too good for the fans to have switched off already.

PENALTY! Argentina 3-13 England | Emiliano Boffelli 24'

20:29 , George Flood

24 mins: The big Edinburgh wing doesn't miss those.

Argentina off and running, cutting the England lead to 10.

Argentina 0-13 England

20:28 , George Flood

23 mins: So much for this all being a bit after The Lord Mayor's Show... the physicality is off the charts so far!

Underhill is smashing anything that moves and carrying with such a vicious intensity - understandably eager to make the most of his first England appearance for more than a year.

Marchant now gives away a penalty at the ruck and Boffelli can get Argentina on the board from in front of the posts after bleeding Argentine flanker Kremer is patched up.

Argentina 0-13 England

20:25 , George Flood

Standard Sport's Nick Purewal at the Stade de France

Ellis Genge will have exorcised a few demons from his torrid time in the Springboks semi-final by blasting the Pumas off the ball at a scrum there.

The Bristol man skewered Argentina to keep Michael Cheika’s men at bay in the England 22.

Argentina 0-13 England

20:24 , George Flood

19 mins: Argentina can be forgiven for targeting Genge in the scrum after his struggles off the bench against the Boks, but he does well there and England roar in defiance after a knock-on from Argentina No8 Isa.

But here come Argentina again after an aerial contest which sees Smith pick up a knock after coming off second best against Boffelli.

England are under the cosh again after their own scrum, until a costly fumble stops the Pumas in their tracks.

Argentina 0-13 England

20:20 , George Flood

16 mins: Argentina are sustaining their first bout of pressure of this first half now after Stuart is pinged at the breakdown.

They rumble their way close to the line with a penalty advantage after kicking for the lineout, but England's defence just about stand firm and we come back for another penalty.

This time the Pumas opt for a scrum.

PENALTY! Argentina 0-13 England | Owen Farrell 13'

20:17 , George Flood

13 mins: Argentina cannot live with England's repeated pressure at the moment.

Another cheap breakdown infringement gives Farrell another penalty that he duly booms over.

A point a minute so far for England! A superb start from Borthwick's men.

Argentina 0-10 England

20:16 , George Flood

Standard Sport's Nick Purewal at the Stade de France

England’s man of the tournament Ben Earl races home for a try from a lovely line, scything through from deep.

Argentina’s defence deserted them, but England will not care. Farrell’s conversion hands Borthwick’s men a 10-point lead.

TRY! Argentina 0-10 England | Ben Earl 8'

20:11 , George Flood

8 mins: England register their first try inside 10 minutes!

Some bruising carries into the 22 and they roll on after a huge hit on tighthead prop Stuart.

The eager Dan plays a big part and England go left, with Smith drifting along with Farrell and picking out the superb line of Earl in the outside channel.

The Saracens No8 - arguably England's player of the tournament - then bursts through from deep to touch down.

Great try. Farrell adds the extras and the Pumas are already in a 10-point hole.

Argentina 0-3 England

20:09 , George Flood

5 mins: England safely claim the first lineout after a clever kick from Farrell.

They are thundering into the dark blue defensive line, with the pressure already ramping up on Argentina...

Argentina 0-3 England

20:07 , George Flood

4 mins: Theo Dan races out of the defensive line to make a cutting tackle and the ball is lost in contact.

England roar in glee as they get the put-in at the first scrum of the evening.

Superb work from Youngs straight from the restart a few moments ago as well to get England moving.

Argentina 0-3 England

20:06 , George Flood

Standard Sport's Nick Purewal at the Stade de France

Farrell boots England into an early lead off the tee after Tom Curry won a rapid turnover.

The Red Rose skipper was booed heavily by a mixed crowd, and certainly not by any England fans.

The big screens said “respect the kicker” but the crowd opted not to heed the instruction. Poor.

PENALTY! Argentina 0-3 England | Owen Farrell 3'

20:05 , George Flood

3 mins: No mistake from the England captain, who slots over the first points of the evening.

Argentina vs England

20:04 , George Flood

2 mins: A good start from England as they kick well and win a penalty turnover at the breakdown as Argentina look to set out their first attack.

Argentina are in a very nice change strip tonight, dark blue with a white sash and red trim. Very smart.

So the game no one wants to end up in, but also that no one wants to lose.

The third-place play-off, rebranded as the bronze final, is here at the World Cup.

England need to sign off in style against Argentina, the team they beat 27-10 in Marseille back on September 9.

A clutch of players have the chance to end their Test careers with a win in Paris tonight, while the new generation of Red Rose men will want to set the tone for the future.

Provided England have been able to refresh themselves mentally and physically after that agonising 16-15 semi-final defeat by South Africa, they should win here.

The Standard's rugby correspondent Nick Purewal offers his pre-match thoughts from the Stade de France...

Record-breaking Youngs set for final England hurrah

19:20 , George Flood

An emotional night in store for Ben Youngs, one of England's greatest servants and their record caps holder who bows out of international rugby after his 127th senior appearance - though he will continue to play at club level for Leicester.

He's been a bit of an afterthought after previously holding that 9 shirt for so long, with Alex Mitchell stepping up to the plate after Jack van Poortvliet's pre-tournament injury and fellow veteran Danny Care impressing repeatedly as his chief back-up.

But tonight the 34-year-old is after one more big performance to bring the curtain down on an illustrious England career that began in 2010 - when Steve Borthwick was captain - and encompassed four World Cups as well as four Six Nations titles.

Arundell to take over from May as England's speed merchant

19:09 , George Flood

For once, a group of British speed merchants might just pull off a seamless passing of the baton, writes Nick Purewal in Paris.

When England take on Argentina for third place at the Rugby World Cup in Paris tonight, Jonny May will complete an interchange with Henry Arundell that has the hallmarks of a smooth transition.

British sprinting history might be littered with the disastrous clang of metal on track, but the selfless May has ensured a handover with a difference in France.

The Gloucester wing won his 78th and most likely final England cap in the agonising 16-15 semi-final defeat by South Africa at the Stade de France last weekend.

May, 33, will end his Test career as the very exemplar of what exacting head coach Steve Borthwick wants from his Red Rose wingers.

Argentina vs England: Bronze final history

18:55 , George Flood

England's only previous appearance in a bronze medal match at the Rugby World Cup came all the way back in 1995, when they were bested 19-9 by France at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.

Olivier Roumat and Emile Ntamack both registered tries that day, with England getting all their points from the boot of Rob Andrew.

This is Argentina's third outing in a third-place play-off, meanwhile, having thrashed hosts Les Bleus 34-10 at the Parc des Princes back in 2007 with the great Felipe Contepomi on fire.

They were beaten in 2015 though, the Springboks coming out on top 24-13 at the London Stadium.

Dallaglio: England must not settle after setting new benchmark

18:38 , George Flood

England have set the benchmark at this World Cup for the level that this Test team can reach, writes Lawrence Dallaglio.

The Red Rose men now need to get out there, finish a job well done and claim third place and a bronze medal in Paris.

Their third-place play-off against Argentina is the game they did not want to play this week – but it is still far preferable to having already been at home for the best part of two weeks.

Steve Borthwick and his coaches will have had to be mindful of the physical and mental onslaught that was last weekend’s gut-wrenching 16-15 semi-final defeat by South Africa, and its lingering impact.

Players would understandably need time to get over that tense match, and England’s last-gasp defeat.

The emotions of going so close to a final only to be knocked out in dramatic fashion can be all over the place.

So there are some players not involved who could be equal parts physically and mentally shattered.

England left everything out there against the Boks, but now they need to do the same against the Pumas.

This is an international match, on the global stage, amid an intense rivalry between these two teams.

England team news

17:59 , George Flood

Elsewhere for England, record caps holder Ben Youngs is in at scrum-half for his 127th and final Test appearance before international retirement.

Fellow retiree Courtney Lawes is not involved though, while Dan Cole could also be making his final England appearance from the bench.

The likes of Jonny May and Joe Marler - whose own international careers may now be coming to an end - are not involved, like Lawes.

Marcus Smith starts at full-back as Henry Arundell comes in on the wing, with Freddie Steward moving from 15 to the flank.

Joe Marchant and Manu Tuilagi are partnered again in the centres as captain Owen Farrell remains at fly-half alongside Youngs.

In the pack, young Saracen Theo Dan gets a chance to shine at hooker alongside Ellis Genge and Will Stuart, with Jamie George on the bench.

Ollie Chessum is recalled to partner Maro Itoje at lock, with Curry joined in the back row by Ben Earl and Sam Underhill - making his first England appearance for more than a year.

Curry starts for England after Mbonambi row

17:51 , George Flood

It's an intriguing team selection from Steve Borthwick tonight - a real mix of old and new with one or two surprises thrown in.

Tom Curry keeps his place in the back row after a difficult week that saw World Rugby deem there was "insufficient evidence" to charge South Africa hooker Bongi Mbonambi after he was accused of aiming racial slurs at the Sale flanker both in last weekend's semi-final match and in last year's autumn international at Twickenham.

The decision has left England furious, with the RFU slamming World Rugby in a strong statement and Borthwick also lamenting the fact that no hearing denied Curry the chance to have his voice heard.

England's players and coaches have been rallying round and supporting Curry all week, praising his courage and resilience.
