New Liverpool head coach Arne Slot impressed Reds fans as he spoke well during his first interview since arriving on Merseyside. And the 45-year-old has already recognized an important point as he takes over from Jurgen Klopp.

While there will be continuity in the way that Liverpool plays next season and the transition should be as smooth as possible, Slot has wisely already made clear that he will be his own man at Anfield. He has been influenced by Klopp, but he needs to be his own character and put his own stamp on things.

Slot has watched old Liverpool training sessions as well as matches to get a feel for what the players are used to. But while his principles are similar to Klopp's, the Dutchman is absolutely clear that he will be his own man.

"There are two things [why] to do this," Slot explained during his first interview with club media. "Of course to get to know more about the players because mostly you see them during the games. And you want to know also what the culture is, how they train and what they are used to.

"I think it's always interesting if you are the successor of Jurgen Klopp and also Pepijn Lijnders, who does quite a bit of work on the training pitch, to see what their ideas were on the training pitch. I said this, we all try to steal a bit from each other – mostly this is done by looking at the games but if you can see the way they train, that can only help you.

"Let one thing be clear: the players are not going to get all the same exercises again – we will implement our own things. But it's interesting to see what they did also during the week."

Liverpool.com says: It is really important that things are slightly different from how Klopp did them because there is no point trying to replicate exactly what he did. The Liverpool squad will benefit from a fresh way of thinking and while it would have made no sense to completely pivot away from what came before, having a new outlook on things like training can have a beneficial impact.
