Liverpool head coach Arne Slot praised Jurgen Klopp for leaving the club in the “best possible way.” Thanks to the extensive rebuild that his predecessor orchestrated last year, the Dutchman believes the Reds possess a talented nucleus that’s built to win.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since officially being appointed as the Reds newest boss, Slot commended Klopp for his vital impact on the Premier League and Liverpool.

"I think when that came to an end the new rivalry in [Europe] came because of Jurgen. He managed Liverpool and Pep [Guardiola] of course managed Manchester City," Slot said. "I think for everybody who loves football it was a fantastic era to watch the both of them getting the best out of each other. I’ve seen a lot of games of Liverpool, a lot of games of City as well, and when you live in Europe the Premier League is probably the nicest league to follow.

“He has done a tremendous job over here and I am really happy with that as a fan, but now as his successor he left Liverpool in the best possible way, I think. So, a very good team, the fans are very good as well, so [I am] looking forward to it.”

On the heels of a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, Klopp enacted major changes to Liverpool’s roster, starting with the departures of captain Jordan Henderson, vice captain James Milner, Fabinho, Naby Keïta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Following the midfield exodus, the Reds brought in a wave of young talent, including Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo.

The summer rebuild has provided Liverpool with an upward trajectory, something that can’t be said for every club after the departure of an iconic manager. For evidence, look no further to the alleged poor state that Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United in 2013.

Following David Moyes’s infamous 10-month tenure as the Red Devils’ manager, fans swiftly pointed fingers at Ferguson, alleging he handed over a club that was in decline. Ageing stars such as Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra were struggling to regain their dominant form and showing signs of wear and tear.

Despite departing a team with an average age of 26.1, Ferguson clapped back at the notion that Manchester United was collectively too old to succeed.

“There appeared to be a consensus of opinion that the group was too old … nonsense,” he wrote in his autobiography. “Ferdinand, Evra, Vidic, Carrick, Giggs and Scholes were all in their thirties. Chelsea started the current season as favourites for the title with a squad that also had six players in their thirties; I don’t hear any grumbles about the age of their group.”

But Klopp certainly can't be accused of taking the easy route when it came to overhauling the Liverpool squad last summer. And while a period of transition is still in store, Slot can be thankful he has inherited a squad with a much younger and fresher profile than the one Moyes inherited from Ferguson many years ago.
