Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney ‘frustrated’ at having to self-isolate after Stuart Armstrong’s positive Covid test

Kieran Tierney has revealed his frustration at having to self-isolate for 14 days – ruling him out of Scotland’s next three fixtures and Arsenal’s Premier League trip to Manchester City which follows the international break – after his Scottish teammate Stuart Armstrong tested positive for Covid-19.

Tierney returned a negative result, as did every other member of Scotland’s squad and staff, but the defender was deemed to have come into contact with Armstrong. Celtic’s Ryan Christie, one physiotherapist and one masseur were also deemed to have come into contact with the Southampton midfielder and all have been told to isolate for two weeks.

Tierney said in a statement: "I'm so disappointed and frustrated to be in this situation. I have adhered to all regulations and made sure I was socially distancing from my team mates in the hotel. I've also tested negative. I know Arsenal and the SFA are now in discussions with the Scottish authorities to gain a further understanding."

Armstrong returned a negative test result on arrival in Edinburgh on Monday, but a follow-up Uefa test returned a positive result on Wednesday morning, a day before Scotland’s Euro 2020 play-off semi-final with Israel at Hampden Park.

Armstrong must now self-isolate for 10 days from the date of the positive test (Tuesday 6 October), so will miss Scotland’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Slovakia and the Czech Republic, as well as the Israel game. Both Tierney and Christie will miss all three matches too.

Tierney will be unavailable for Arsenal’s trip to the Etihad on 17 October, while Christie will miss Celtic’s Old Firm derby against Rangers on the same date.
