Mikel Arteta has confirmed Pablo Mari will miss Arsenal’s clash with Newcastle United on Monday and he could be out for “a few matches” too.

The defender missed Thursday’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace after complaining of tightness in his calf.

Mari has impressed in recent weeks, coming into the Arsenal team and helping them concede just once in the four games he played.

The Gunners, however, will now have to cope without Mari for Monday’s match with Newcastle after Arteta confirmed he would be out for a few games.

“He had a calf injury as well in training on Wednesday,” said Arteta. “I think he will miss a few matches. He’s another one that we will lose.

“But we’ve got Gabriel [Magalhaes] back after Covid, which is good news, we’ve got Thomas [Partey] back as well. So let’s focus on the positives.”

Partey came off the bench on Thursday night to make his first appearance for Arsenal since the start of December and he is pushing to start against Newcastle.

“Well, he’s made the right step,” Arteta said .“Obviously he hasn’t played much football in the last four months. He had an injury in exactly the same place that he had before when he got injured against Spurs.

“Now we have the reassurance that he can compete for 25 to 30 minutes. He did well, he didn’t feel anything, so now we’re going to be looking for the next step.”
