Arsenal began their Women's Super League season with a London derby win over reigning champions Chelsea.

Beth Mead scored twice for Arsenal in a 3-2 win at the Emirates Stadium as the Gunners held on to begin the season with three points.

The north Londoners took the lead in the 14th minute when Vivianne Miedema fired a fierce shot into the bottom corner before Erin Cuthbert equalised a minute before the break, slotting home Melanie Leupolz's pass.

Arsenal regained the lead shortly after the restart when Mead lashed a stunning shot into the far corner and the England striker rolled in her second of the game on the hour.

Chelsea battled valiantly and pulled a goal back through Pernille Harder's 64th-minute header but Emma Hayes' side could not find an equaliser.

New Arsenal manger Jonas Eidevall collapsed to his knees at the full time whistle, celebrating a thrilling first win of the WSL season.
