Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool LIVE! Jota goal - Carabao Cup result, match stream and latest updates today

Arsenal vs Liverpool - LIVE!

Diogo Jota stepped up with two goals as he lead Liverpool to a 2-0 victory against Arsenal in the second-leg as the Reds booked their place in the Carabao Cup final.

With more pressure on the Portuguese forward in the absence of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, he shone with a goal in either half as Liverpool cruised through and they will face Chelsea at Wembley next month.

The second came with 15 minutes to seal the tie, but he was made to wait for a VAR review after the lob was initially ruled out for offside.

Thomas Partey only returned to England from the Africa Cup of Nations earlier in the day, but he was straight into the squad and brought on in the second-half. After two yellow cards in the space of four minutes, he was sent-off as Arsenal picked up yet another red card under Mikel Arteta.

Match report

22:57 , Matt Verri

Liverpool booked their place in the Carabao Cup final with a 2-0 win over Arsenal in the second-leg at the Emirates.

After a 0-0 draw at Anfield last week it was all to play for, but the visitors took control with Jota’s first-half strike.

The Liverpool forward was on target again late in the match as he put the tie beyond doubt, before Thomas Partey was shown two yellow cards in a matter of minutes and sent off, as Jurgen Klopp’s side set up a Wembley final against Chelsea in late February.

Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Gabriel Martinelli after the match, turning attention unprompted to the Brazilian went asked about facing Chelsea in the final.

“Martinelli by the way, everybody should remember that name,” Klopp said. “He’s an outstanding player.”

Sunday February 27 is the date for the Carabao Cup final - Liverpool vs Chelsea.

Man City have won six of the last eight finals, but they won’t be lifting the trophy this season. Chance for Liverpool and Chelsea to get their hands on some early silverware.

Next stop...

22:08 , Matt Verri

Alexander-Arnold’s post-match thoughts...

21:54 , Matt Verri

“It’s what we want. It wasn’t quite the same when we lifted [the Premier League] in an empty stadium so it’s good for us to be in a final and have the opportunity to do that against a top side.

““It’s obviously good for us to get there. It’s what we expect. We’ve performed very well, had young players and a mixed squad.

“We performed tonight and it’s what we deserved.”

Partey shown red...

21:52 , Matt Verri

Thomas Partey was knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday with Ghana, and landed back in England today at midday.

Brought on with just over 15 minutes to go, shown two yellow cards in a couple of minutes and sent-off.

Not the return he was hoping for.

Goal that sealed it...

FULL-TIME

21:38 , Matt Verri

Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s side are going to Wembley, where they will face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

Diogo Jota with the goals, Thomas Partey with the red card... Arsenal can have no complaints with the result.

21:36 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: Ball over the top... Nketiah can’t get on the end of it. Hasn’t had a touch since he came on.

Just over a minute left. Liverpool cruising into the Carabao Cup final.

21:34 , Matt Verri

90+1 mins: Five minutes added on. Arsenal desperate for these to go as quickly as possible.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are going to enjoy them all. The away fans are in fine voice.

PARTEY RED CARD!

21:32 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Unbelievable. Thomas Partey is sent-off!

Nine and a half hours after landing in England, he’s lunged in and caught Fabinho late... and he’s off. Crazy challenge to make a minute after his first yellow.

Yet another red card for Arsenal under Arteta.

21:30 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Back in the country, back in the team... and back in the book. Partey shown a yellow card.

Alexander-Arnold curls in a free-kick, White heads it away. It’s straight back to the the full-back though, and he sends it wide to Van Dijk. Eventually out for a goal-kick.

21:28 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Slight delay as a pitch invader runs on as Ramsdale waits to take the goal-kick.

Eventually we get back underway. Arsenal need two goals in the last five minutes... that proved to be no problem for Tottenham last night.

21:24 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Ball into Martinelli, he turns and gets a shot away but it flies over the bar. That would have made it interesting.

Jones now into book for Liverpool. That’s two yellow cards for each team.

Malik Ouzia at the Emirates

21:22 , Matt Verri

That’s goodnight. Clinical from Liverpool, clinical from Jota and Liverpool are headed to Wembley.

GOAL! Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool | Diogo Jota

21:21 , Matt Verri

GOAL GIVEN!

They can celebrate now. Jota is played onside by Gabriel, and Liverpool have their second. And that is surely that.

GOOO.... OFFSIDE!

21:20 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Robertson into the box and from a tight angle fires at goal. Just whistles past the far post, great effort.

Liverpool come again... AND JOTA HAS HIS SECOND!

Or does he? Offside flag is up! Lovely lobbed finish over Ramsdale. VAR checking it...

21:17 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Smith Rowe and Lacazette off, Partey and Nketiah on. That will allow Odegaard to play in a more advanced position.

Liverpool also making a change... Milner on for Henderson.

21:15 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Martinelli onto his left foot this time, it’s probably an attempted cross but it’s arrowing into the top corner and Kelleher has to tip it over the bar. Corner Arsenal.

Martinelli takes... poor ball. Headed clear at the near post.

21:13 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Smith Rowe muscles his way past Henderson but Fabinho is once again in the right place to mop up any danger.

Odegaard, Smith Rowe, out to Martinelli. Works it onto his right foot and puts the cross in, but Van Dijk heads it away.

21:11 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Really nervy few moments for Arsenal.

Alexander-Arnold again bombs forward, clips a cross into the box and Jota can’t quite get on the end of it. It drops to Minamino, and Tomiyasu throws himself in front of the shot to block.

21:10 , Matt Verri

68 mins: White wins it back for Arsenal and he sets the Gunners away. They have space and numbers on this counter.

It’s a terrible pass from Smith Rowe, right between Saka and Lacazette. Arsenal win it back, but their progress is stopped once again... this time by a foul.

There was a real chance if Smith Rowe had have just fed it out wide to Saka.

21:08 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Odegaard with a nice touch from Lokonga’s header, and he wins the free-kick.

25 minutes to go, and it’s about now you’d expect Arteta to turn to his bench. Aren’t too many options for him though, a few untested youngsters.

21:06 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Wonderful cross from Alexander-Arnold, so dangerous. Tierney can’t cut it out as he slides in, but Arsenal just about clear.

The Gunners break, and Konate is shown a yellow card for putting a stop to it. Liverpool make their second change - Minamino on to replace Gordon.

21:03 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Saka’s cross is a really good one, but nobody was expecting it and the ball runs across the face of goal. Tierney gets there, and his ball in is blocked behind for a corner.

Kelleher punches it out to the edge of the box, Smith Rowe is there but he send it over on the half-volley. Tough chance.

21:01 , Matt Verri

59 mins: HOW IS IT NOT TWO?!

Corner Liverpool, Konate with the towering header but it bounces back off hte post. Henderson should score from the rebound but it’s saved by Ramsdale. Offside flag up now anyway.

Konate inches away from potentially finishing the tie off.

20:59 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Tomiyasu joins Lacazette in the book, as he’s caught on the ball by Jones and then drags the Liverpool midfielder back. Can have no complaints about that.

Good header to clear the free-kick from Tomiyasu, makes up for his error.

Malik Ouzia at the Emirates

20:58 , Matt Verri

“The energy that faded from Arsenal’s play during the first half is back at the start of the second but they’re still yet to really test Kelleher.

They’ve got to make a spell like this count because a second for Liverpool - which Gordon should have got a few minutes ago - would probably kill the tie dead.”

20:57 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Really open start to the half. Arsenal cut open by a pass from Alexander-Arnold, who finds Fabinho in so much space. Scoops it out wide, but the touch is poor from Jota and Arsenal can clear.

20:56 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Martinelli jumps for a bouncing ball as Kelleher comes out to claim it.

Goalkeeper drops it under pressure, but no harm down as the referee blows the whistle. Free-kick.

20:54 , Matt Verri

51 mins: ANOTHER ONE!

For Liverpool this time. Jota brings it forward down the left and he skips past White, who has to do better than that.

Cuts it back to Gordon who really should be scoring from six yards out, but he blazes it over.

20:51 , Matt Verri

49 mins: HUGE CHANCE!

Arsenal’s biggest moment of the match. Lokonga lifts a perfect ball over the top and Lacazette is through on goal.

He rushes the finish as Robertson comes in to close him down, and pokes it well over the bar. What a massive opportunity.

20:50 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Kelleher has to react quickly as a clearance bounces free and very nearly straight into the path of Lacazette. Goalkeeper is out quickly to claim.

Martinelli gets the ball and immediately three Liverpool shirts surround him. One of them is Firmino, who slides in and wins the ball back.

Malik Ouzia at the Emirates

20:48 , Matt Verri

Ibrahima Konate is on for Joel Matip at the break. May well be that Matip has a knock but it wouldn’t surprise me if that was purely tactical, to give Alexander-Arnold a hand dealing with the pace of Martinelli.

The Brazilian’s looked Arsenal’s biggest threat by some way.

20:47 , Matt Verri

Konate on for Matip at the break, as Liverpool make their first change.

Back underway for the second half!

20:44 , Matt Verri

It’s not a bench that will give Mikel Arteta a huge amount of hope.

Eddie Nketiah will be brought on you’d imagine, and potentially Charlie Patino in midfield. Surely Partey won’t feature too much, considering he was on a plane a few hours ago?

Bit more experience on the bench for Liverpool. Milner, Konate, Gomez... players Klopp can trust to help see the game out if needed.

First-half stats...

20:39 , Matt Verri

Not a huge amount in terms of clear-cut chances.

Arsenal had two shots, Liverpool three - both had just one on target. Crucially for Liverpool though, that one was Jota’s goal.

64% of possession for the visitors who really grew into the match. Arsenal have to find a response after the break.

How Liverpool took the lead...

20:35 , Matt Verri

HALF-TIME

20:32 , Matt Verri

Arsenal 0-1 Liverpool

The visitors lead at the break thanks to Jota’s strike. They also had a header from Matip disallowed for offside.

Arsenal started well, but the last 25 minutes or so it’s been Liverpool controlling things. Plenty for Arteta to consider.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

20:31 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Henderson puts the ball into the box, but it’s too close to Ramsdale and the goalkeeper can easily claim it.

One minute added on.

Malik Ouzia at the Emirates

20:30 , Matt Verri

Arsenal have got several players - Odegaard, Smith Rowe, Tomiyasu - returning from injuries and absences so you wonder whether they’ve all got 90, or even 120 minutes in them.

Then again, Thomas Partey’s one of their only senior options on the bench and he had his breakfast in Cameroon this morning.

20:29 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Gordon somehow keeps the ball in play as Martinelli and Tierney close him down, and Liverpool work it to the other side of the pitch.

Jones is brought down by Lacazette, and the Arsenal captain is shown the first yellow card of the match. Stood on Jones’ foot with a late challenge.

20:27 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Liverpool a bit fortunate, as Fabinho’s pass bounces off Smith-Rowe but it rolls back harmlessly to Van Dijk. They would have been exposed if that had fallen to an Arsenal shirt.

Good from Lokonga to put pressure on Alexander-Arnold, but the Liverpool man is strong enough to keep possession. Arsenal do trigger the press this time and force it all the way back to Kelleher.

20:25 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Martinelli brings it forward on the left, been so direct running at Alexander-Arnold whenever he’s been given the ball.

Odegaard sends a ball towards the back post, but Liverpool’s right back is in the right place to head it away.

Simon Collings at the Emirates

20:23 , Matt Verri

Arsenal could do with a strong end to the half here after losing their grip on this game a bit. Liverpool have started to control the game and Arsenal’s tempo has just dropped a bit.

20:22 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Jota briefly turns Tomiyasu, but Odegaard comes in to challenge and gets man and ball. Referee gives the free-kick to Liverpool.

Arsenal have looked dangerous when Odegaard has got on the ball, it just hasn’t happened enough for them.

20:20 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Firmino is pulling off some lovely flicks. Another one on the halfway line nearly sends Henderson away, but the midfielder can’t control it.

Alexander-Arnold digs a cross out to the back post, Jota nods it back across the face of goal but there’s no Liverpool player to get on the end of it.

20:17 , Matt Verri

32 mins: That helps them though, Matip caught on the ball and suddenly Arsenal can break.

Odegaard has it in space and waits for Saka to get up before playing it wide. His shot is blocked, but the Gunners keep the pressure on and win a corner.

Saka’s ball is a good one into the six-yard box, but it’s headed away and Jones then boots it up the pitch.

20:16 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Robertson whips a cross in from deep, and it’s not hugely convincing from Gabriel as he lets it hit his shin. Takes his time before eventually clearing, and he can only send it out for a throw-in.

It’s Arsenal who are struggling to get out now, all ten outfield players pushed back in their own half.

Malik Ouzia at the Emirates

20:15 , Matt Verri

When Arsenal were in the ascendancy in the first ten minutes it didn’t matter that their midfield is half-empty because Liverpool were having a hard time getting that far.

Now the game’s settled and the visitors have got a foothold, they’re exploiting the space between the lines much more readily.

20:13 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Jota drifts past the challenges on the edge of the box before finding Gordon... his pass through to Alexander-Arnold isn’t the best.

Arsenal break and Martinelli drives into the box, but Fabinho comes sliding in to stop him before the shot comes in. Brilliant challenge, couldn’t afford to get that one wrong.

20:11 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Better pressing from Arsenal as three players get around Jones and force him to knock it out.

Liverpool get it forward again though and White has to be careful with a bouncing ball as Jota pressurises him... centre-back does enough to head it away.

20:08 , Matt Verri

23 mins: White plays it forward to Saka, but there’s too much on the pass and it skips away out of play.

How do Arsenal respond to that? They started well, but they’ve been forced back ever since Matip’s disallowed goal. Gunners have to find a way to change the momentum now.

Malik Ouzia at the Emirates

20:07 , Matt Verri

A real nothing goal for Arsenal to concede, that. It was a lovely flick from Firmino in the build-up but after that Jota ran away from Tomiyasu too easily and his reverse finish didn’t have to be particularly precise or powerful to beat Ramsdale, who committed too early to the opposite corner.

GOAL! Arsenal 0-1 Liverpool | Diogo Jota 19'

20:05 , Matt Verri

LIVERPOOL TAKE THE LEAD!

And this one will stand. Gorgeous flick from Firmino on the halfway line and Liverpool are away.

Jota nutmegs Tomiyasu as he drives inside, and his shot from the edge of the box is completely scuffed but that wrong-foots Ramsdale and the Arsenal keeper can’t change direction in time to save. Liverpool ahead.

20:03 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Visitors enjoying their bets spell of possession in the match now. Arsenal sitting off more than they did in the early minutes.

Van Dijk goes for the big switch out to Gordon on the right, but the winger can’t keep it in.

20:01 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Arsenal have started well but Liverpool are growing into it, and that disallowed goal is a real warning sign for the Gunners.

Matip had just drifted into an offside position as he followed in Fabinho’s header.

19:58 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Tomiyasu slips and that allows Liverpool to break down their left. Jota has space to run into, he’s forced wide by White... but the Liverpool man wins a corner.

It’s his side’s first of the match. Arsenal briefly exposed after Tomiyasu lost his footing on the halfway line.

GOOO.... OFFSIDE! Matip turns in from the corner after Fabinho won the initial header, but he’s offside.

Simon Collings at the Emirates

19:56 , Matt Verri

Alexander-Arnold is being run ragged by Martinelli right now and it is not often you say that about the England right-back. Liverpool have started slowly and, particularly out wide, they look vulnerable.

19:55 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Gabriel goes long to Tierney who has made a nice run down the left wing.

First-time cross into the box, but he’s stretching and can’t get much power on it. Matip across to easily clear.

19:53 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Great ball through to Smith Rowe and he has space to turn into before playing it wide to Martinelli.

Alexander-Arnold’s challenge doesn’t stop him, and Martinelli loops a ball into the box. Kelleher wins a free-kick as Saka barges into him.

Malik Ouzia at the Emirates

19:51 , Matt Verri

Those little dinks over the wall from free-kicks right on the edge are so hard to pull off but Lacazette has very nearly nailed it there. Excellent start from Arsenal and the Emirates is fizzing.

19:51 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Odegaard and Lacazette the two standing over it for Arsenal.

It’s Lacazette... HITS THE BAR! Lovely clipped effort over the wall, but he’s denied by the woodwork.

19:49 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Not convincing defending as Lacazette brings it down and it bobbles around in the box. Three Arsenal players converge on the ball, but Alexander-Arnold’s clearance bounces back to Kelleher.

Arsenal straight back on the attack though, and Saka wins a free-kick right on the edge of the area. Great position.

19:48 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Martinelli runs at Alexander-Arnold, and the Brazilian wins the first corner of the night.

White makes the move towards the near post and it’s towards him, but he can’t flick it on and Liverpool get it clear. Comes back to Martinelli, and his cross is deflected behind for another corner. Good start from Arsenal.

19:47 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Arsenal pressing high right from the off as you’d expect, Lacazette charging in to close Kelleher down.

It’s Odegaard alongside Lokonga in midfield for the Gunners, with Smith Rowe just ahead of them. Odegaard wins it back for Arsenal after a comfortable spell of Liverpool possession.

KICK-OFF!

Liverpool get us underway at the Emirates!

19:43 , Matt Verri

Henderson leads the Liverpool team out, and they’re followed by Lacazette and the Gunners.

Not long now!

19:42 , Matt Verri

Here we go, players are in the tunnel. Great atmosphere at the Emirates.

Arsenal’s last chance of winning a trophy this season, so it’s a huge night for them. Jurgen Klopp doesn’t usually go strong in the Carabao Cup, but he’s made it clear he wants to get to Wembley.

Should be a brilliant match.

Klopp’s pre-match thoughts

19:36 , Matt Verri

“Look at the line-up - it’s a very offensive line-up but that’s what we expect anyway,” Klopp said.

“Arsenal want to win, we want to win. We have to be positive and offensive as well - I think it will be a good game.”

19:31 , Matt Verri

15 minutes until kick-off at the Emirates. 0-0 a week ago at Anfield... we’ll have a winner tonight.

It might take extra-time and potentially penalties, but we will have a winner!

Warm-ups underway...

Arteta on team selection

19:18 , Matt Verri

“Pushing the players, there are players that haven’t had any training sessions,” Arteta said.

“But we have to put a team out there and the players were really willing to come back to play. That’s how we got to this stage.

“It’s the team we can put out today, we didn’t have anybody else. We’re dragging players to play - five of them haven’t had any sessions.

“I’m really pleased with [Partey]. It shows his commitment. He was really disappointed to go out of AFCON, but straight away he said he wanted to be involved. He landed at midday, he came straight to the hotel and he wants to be on the bench ready to help.”

Partey is on the bench for Arsenal tonight. Two days ago he was in Cameroon, as Ghana crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations in the group stage.

He flew straight back to London and was expected to be available for the Burnley match this weekend, having not missed a single Premier League matches.

But he’s back even sooner than that... straight into the squad already!

Visitors have arrived...

19:06 , Matt Verri

They would have been disappointed to draw the first-leg 0-0 having spent so much of it with ten men, but Liverpool will still be backing themselves to reach the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds have lost just one of their last six visits to the Emirates.

19:00 , Matt Verri

No Bernd Leno on the bench for the Gunners, which means Karl Hein is in the matchday squad.

The German is out with a back injury, while Calum Chambers and Cedric Soares also miss out.

18:54 , Matt Verri

It’s a strong line-up for the Gunners, who have Odegaard back from Covid to ease their midfield worries. It looks like he’ll start in a deeper role, alongside Lokonga.

Arteta will also be relieved to have Tomiyasu back, as he is able to name his first-choice backline.

For Liverpool, Kelleher gets the nod over Alisson in goal. Jota and Firmino both start as the Reds continue to try and cope without Salah and Mane.

LIVERPOOL LINEUP

18:47 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Jones, Gordon, Firmino, Jota

Subs: Alisson, Adrian, Konate, Milner, Gomez, Minamino, Tsimikas, Williams, Morton.

ARSENAL LINEUP

The Arsenal striker provided a positive update after being released by Gabon for checks on his heart.

“Hi guys, I came back to London to do some additional checks, and I’m very happy to say my heart is absolutely fine and I’m completely healthy,” it read.

“Really appreciate all the messages over the last few days and I’m already back at it!”

Your Evening Standard prediction

18:01 , Jonathan Gorrie

Much is likely to depend on the strength of the team Arteta is able to field here after Sunday’s controversial postponement.

Arsenal rightly received plenty of plaudits for keeping Liverpool at bay for more than an hour with 10 men on Merseyside, but they must now make sure those efforts were not in vain.

Liverpool have inevitably lacked that attacking spark at times with no Salah or Mane, although got back into the groove against Brentford.

Arsenal held their nerve in a penalty shootout against the same opposition to reach the quarter-finals last season and you get the feeling this tie could also go all the way through to spot-kicks after another tense affair.

Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool.

Early Liverpool team news

17:52 , Jonathan Gorrie

As for Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp is still missing Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita due to AFCON.

Thiago Alcantara is expected back in team training after the international break, while Harvey Elliott has stepped up his comeback from a fractured ankle.

Divock Origi is also nearing a return from a knee injury and Liverpool are hopeful that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s latest issue is only short-term.

Early Arsenal team news

17:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

It remains to be seen exactly who will be ready for Arsenal, with Arteta coy on team news at his pre-match press conference but admitting his side still have issues.

Martin Odegaard is back in training after recovering from Covid-19, while the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Takehiro Tomiyasu will all be pushing to play after knocks.

Cedric Soares and Calum Chambers both picked up injuries at Anfield last week.
