Arsenal 3-3 Southampton LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Arsenal 3-3 Southampton LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Arsenal’s Premier League title tilt stuttered yet again even after they came from behind to score two late goals and earn a battling point against bottom club Southampton.

Bukayo Saka’s last-minute equaliser earned the hosts a thrilling 3-3 draw that still hands the impetus to rivals Manchester City ahead of their clash at the Etihad Stadium next week.

Saints had looked on course for a shock win to move off the bottom of the table after Carlos Alcaraz opened the scoring inside a minute and then teed up former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott to double the lead.

Gabriel Martinelli pulled a goal back, but the hosts looked down and out when substitute Duje Caleta-Car headed home in the second half.

However, captain Martin Odegaard bent home a fine strike with two minutes to go before Saka turned in the late leveller before substitute Leandro Trossard rattled the crossbar in stoppage time.

The result leaves Arsenal five points clear of City at the summit, but they have now played two more games than their rivals, whom they meet on Wednesday.

Arsenal had let 2-0 leads slip in their last two games to draw with both Liverpool and West Ham, but they would not get the chance to make it a hat-trick.

Mikel Arteta would have been hoping for a simple evening but saw his side fall behind to a goal after just 27 seconds as goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale gifted possession to Alcaraz, who duly slotted home.

Walcott doubled the lead, leaving Gabriel Magalhaes trailing in his wake to finish coolly after latching on to an Alcaraz pass, with the Emirates Stadium stunned into silence.

Oleksandr Zinchenko called an impromptu huddle to rally the hosts and it worked in the short term at least as Martinelli turned home a Saka cross.

Ben White had a flicked header cleared off the line by Alcaraz in first-half stoppage time after Southampton had lost Jan Bednarek to a head injury.

With Arsenal toiling and visiting keeper Gavin Bazunu doing a fine job of holding up play, it was Southampton who struck again, Bednarek’s replacement Caleta-Car free to head home at the back post as Arsenal failed to deal with a corner.

Arteta threw on Trossard, Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson in an attempt to set up a grandstand finish, but, after Gabriel Jesus had missed a couple of decent chances, it was skipper Odegaard whose curled finish gave them hope.

That hope would turn into a point as Nelson’s low shot was saved by Bazunu, only for Saka to react quickest and finish, before Trossard’s effort from the edge of the box cannoned off the woodwork.

Nelson then saw a shot bravely blocked behind by James Ward-Prowse as Saints held on for a point and Arsenal were left to rue another missed opportunity to put further daylight between themselves and City.

Gary Neville tells Arsenal they are now close to losing the title

Friday 21 April 2023 23:46 , Jonathan Gorrie

Gary Neville says Arsenal have “all the hallmarks” of a team blowing their title hopes.

The Premier League leaders fell to their third consecutive draw on Friday night with a late comeback against Southampton not enough to claim a vital three points.

Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka both scored in the dying embers of the 3-3 draw at the Emirates Stadium but the result means the Gunners have now taken just three points from a possible nine.

Wednesday’s trip to a Manchester City team now in ominous form feels like a title-decider when, in truth, Arsenal could have been well clear by then.

Neville has long predicted it would be City who lift the title come May and now believes Arsenal are showing signs of “wobbling like crazy.”

Mikel Arteta ‘cannot wait’ for mouth-watering Man City clash despite Arsenal draw

Friday 21 April 2023 23:28 , Jonathan Gorrie

Mikel Arteta has told his Arsenal side they must win at Manchester City to keep their title dream alive.

Arsenal made a late comeback to draw 3-3 with Southampton on Friday and their lead over City at the top of the Premier League is five points.

Pep Guardiola’s side crucially have two games in hand and they host Arsenal at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Arsenal head their on a poor run of form, having drawn three games on the spin and seen their lead at the top cut from eight points to five.

Gabriel Jesus says ‘a lot of things’ are going on at Arsenal in fresh title race blow

Friday 21 April 2023 23:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

Gabriel Jesus says “a lot of things are going on” as Arsenal dropped points for the third game in a row.

While late goals from Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka saw the Gunners emerge from Friday’s dramatic Premier League clash against Southampton with a point, it piled more pressure on Wednesday’s trip to Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta’s side fell behind to an early goal after Aaron Ramsdale mistake in the first minute allowed Carlos Alcaraz to give the Saints an unlikely lead.

Former Gunner Theo Walcott scored a second not long after before Gabriel Martinelli fired one back in response.

Duje Caleta-Car restored the visitors’ two-goal advantage after the break before Odegaard and Saka struck in the dying embers of the game.

Arsenal are now running out of steam at the worst possible time

Friday 21 April 2023 23:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

At the full-time whistle, the Arsenal players sunk to their knees and collapsed to the floor.

Despite a late flurry against Southampton, they slipped to a third draw in a row and it feels like their title charge is running out of steam.

The Gunners extended their lead at the top over Manchester City to five points, but crucially Pep Guardiola’s have two games in hand.

The two sides will meet on Wednesday at Etihad Stadium and it now feels like a case of do or die for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal will know they cannot afford to perform like they did against Southampton, or certainly not like they did for the first 80 minutes.

It went wrong from the opening 27 seconds, when Saints opened the scoring. Aaron Ramsdale literally passed the ball straight to Carlos Alcaraz, who curled it past him to stun Emirates Stadium.

Gabriel Jesus sends bold title message

Friday 21 April 2023 22:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

Speaking to Sky Sports., Gabriel Jesus insisted the title race is not yet over.

“A lot of things is going on now. We don’t want to come here and talk negative because we are very positive, what we are doing this season is amazing. The Premier League is tough.

“Now is the difficult moment. It is time now to stick together until the end. We still have a lot of things to do this season, it is not over, we are still five points clear. Manchester City have two games in hand but if we want to be champions we have to go there to win the game - that is all.

“We are the youngest team in the league, not making excuses. Sometimes we do right and sometimes we do wrong, everyone can make mistakes that is why it is so important to stick together.

“Everything can happen. Obviously we are not happy with the last three games, we dropped points and we know this is true, no one has to tell us. We dropped a little bit of our level and focus, this is the Premier League, it is so difficult to win this competition.

“We are still there, we are still fighting and we will fight until the end.”

Arsenal’s title hopes were dealt a hammer blow as Southampton held them to a third draw in a row.

Saints had not won away to Arsenal in the league since 1987 and had looked on course for a famous victory as with 88 minutes gone they were 3-1 up.

The Gunners, however, made a late charge and scored through Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka - but they could not find a winner.

It means Arsenal are five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League ahead of Wednesday’s huge match at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal news: Robert Pires explains how ‘matured’ Granit Xhaka has boosted title bid

Friday 21 April 2023 18:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

Granit Xhaka has “matured” to become a key part of Arsenal’s title bid, according to Robert Pires.

The Gunners hero beives the Swiss midfielder has managed to retain an element of his fiery nature while being more responsible on the pitch.

“I value Granit’s in-game intelligence,” he told Apostagolos. “The way he moves between the lines, the way he breaks free from his markers

“Also, he’s matured and gets fewer yellow cards - although he’s still hot-blooded!”

Xhaka, 30, has only accured five Premier League bookings this season having previously reached double figures on four separate occasions.

Another Arsenal star impressing Pires is Gabriel Martinelli, although the Frenchman insists that his rise in form was always on the cards.

“I wouldn’t necessarily call it a surprise,” he continued. “Simply because he’s incredibly talented and we’ve known that for a while.

“Now, like many of his teammates, he has made significant leaps forward this season. He has also become more consistent, although he can certainly continue to improve.”

Arsenal transfer news: Moises Caicedo says January deal was ‘really close’ as he bemoans ‘suffering’ after saga

Friday 21 April 2023 18:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo has admitted that he was “really close” to joining Arsenal in January and “suffered a lot” when the move collapsed.

Arsenal failed with two bids for Caicedo during the most recent transfer window, with the second offer worth around £70million. Brighton, however, rejected all approaches for the Ecuador international as they insisted he would not be leaving mid-season.

Arsenal instead made a deadline-day swoop for Jorginho, signing him from Chelsea for £12m, and Caicedo remained at Brighton.

“I was really close to going [to Arsenal],” Caicedo told the Daily Telegraph. “I suffered a lot. I’m sure I’m going to have many more opportunities. That’s why I continue to do things well.

“[But] it was tough. At the beginning when I didn’t end up going, lots of people would make fun of me on Instagram. People treated me badly. I didn’t check my social media because it would hurt me to see things.

“I’d seen a lot of Arsenal before knowing that there was a possibility of me signing for them. I watched them and I liked them because they have very young, talented players and some stars but they always have that mindset of wanting more.”

Arsenal offered ideal chance to restate case for defence before Erling Haaland test

Friday 21 April 2023 18:36 , Jonathan Gorrie

Arsenal’s match on Friday night looks like a perfect opportunity to get their title charge back on track.

The Gunners have stumbled in their past two matches, blowing two-goal leads against Liverpool and West Ham to draw 2-2 on both occasions. It means their lead at the top of the Premier League over Manchester City stands at four points instead of eight.

Victory on Friday, however, would stretch it to seven ahead of Wednesday’s potential title decider between the two teams at Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal should be confident of doing exactly that, because their own troubles are nothing in comparison to Southampton’s. The visitors are bottom of the League, four points from safety, and are winless in their last six games. The visitors also have a miserable record against Arsenal, winning just two of their 45 League games away to the Gunners, the most recent in 1987.

Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal have crucial ‘advantage’ over Manchester City in Premier League title race

Friday 21 April 2023 18:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

Arsene Wenger has predicted Arsenal will still go on to win the Premier League, believing the Gunners can take advantage of Manchester City’s hectic fixture list.

Arsenal sit four points clear at the top of the table but have played a game more than City, and travel to their title rivals on Wednesday night for a match that could well decide the outcome of the title race.

Before that though, Mikel Arteta’s side host Southampton tonight as they look to get back to winning ways after frustrating draws with Liverpool and West Ham. It gives Arsenal the chance to arrive at the Etihad next week with a seven-point advantage, as City are in FA Cup action this weekend against Sheffield United at Wembley.

Pep Guardiola admitted he is concerned that fatigue could hurt his side in that semi-final clash, after his side secured their place in the Champions League last-four in midweek with a 4-1 aggregate win over Bayern Munich.

Daniel Levy says Arsenal success makes him ‘sick’ as Tottenham chairman defends lack of trophies

Friday 21 April 2023 17:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has admitted that Arsenal’s success this season makes him “feel sick”.

The Gunners are challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title, while Spurs have endured a disappointing campaign and are in danger of missing out on a place in the Champions League.

Levy feels Tottenham have “progressed enormously” under owners ENIC but admits he is not happy with their lack of trophies.

Spurs have won just one League Cup - back in 2008 - in his 22 years at the club and they crashed out of all cup competitions in disappointing fashion this season.Levy admits “the ultimate is about winning the trophies” and says it has been hard watching Arsenal flourish this season.

Levy admits “the ultimate is about winning the trophies” and says it has been hard watching Arsenal flourish this season.

“It has been an incredible journey, in the 22 years Tottenham has progressed enormously in that time period,” said Levy, speaking at the debating society of Cambridge University on March 14. “Not as much as, as a fan, we would hope. But the journey is not over and we are still hoping that we are going to get that trophy that we need.

“It is about winning. But winning, depending on the moment in time you ask that question to various people, means different things. When we first came in to Tottenham, winning was making sure we stayed in the Premier League.

“And then as time goes on and we became more successful it was about getting into the Europa League, getting in the Champions League, and obviously the ultimate is about winning the trophies.

Bukayo Saka to remain Arsenal penalty taker despite West Ham miss after Mikel Arteta backing

Friday 21 April 2023 17:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

Bukayo Saka will remain Arsenal’s penalty taker despite his costly miss against West Ham, manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed.

The England winger sent his spot-kick wide at the London Stadium last weekend in a pivotal moment of the match, just minutes before the Hammers equalised for 2-2 through Jarrod Bowen.

It was the second time in a week that leaders Arsenal had blown a two-goal lead to draw, leaving them only four points clear of Manchester City at the Premier League summit. Pep Guardiola’s defending champions have a game in hand and host their rivals at the Etihad Stadium in a potential title decider next Wednesday.

Arsenal driven by ‘revenge’ as squad bid to get Premier League title bid back on track, says Mikel Arteta

Friday 21 April 2023 17:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

Mikel Arteta says his Arsenal players are being fuelled by “a sense of revenge and determination” as they bid to get their title charge back on track against Southampton.

The Gunners are currently four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, although Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand.

If Arsenal beat Southampton on Friday they can stretch their lead to seven points ahead of Wednesday’s crucial title decider against City at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal’s lead, however, could be greater as they have drawn their last two games after being 2-0 up and Arteta believes those setbacks are driving his side on.

Sol Campbell makes Arsenal return as Mikel Arteta hopes legends can inspire title charge

Friday 21 April 2023 17:38 , Jonathan Gorrie

Mikel Arteta hopes the influence of Arsenal legends can help his side stay ahead of Manchester City in the title run-in.

Invincibles defender Sol Campbell was a guest at Arsenal’s training ground this week as the Gunners prepare to host Southampton on Friday night.

Campbell watched training before having lunch in the players’ canteen with technical director Edu and fellow invincible Martin Keown. After lunch, Campbell mingled with the players and had a long conversation with captain Martin Odegaard.

Arteta and Edu have regularly organised meetings with the current squad and club legends, including David Seaman, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry. They will hope the latest one has lifted the mood after 2-2 draws at Liverpool and West Ham handed the initiative in the title race to City.

Arsenal team news: Zinchenko could return

Friday 21 April 2023 17:30 , Jonathan Gorrie

William Saliba has been out for a month and is unavailable once again for the Gunners, with fears that he could miss the rest of the season with the back injury suffered against Sporting Lisbon last week.

Arsenal are hoping that Oleksandr Zinchenko will return after missing the draw at West Ham with a groin issue, though Arteta said on Thursday that was not guaranteed either.

Elsewhere, Jorginho and Eddie Nketiah are among those pushing for starts should the Arsenal boss opt to make changes. Mohamed Elneny and Takehiro Tomiyasu won’t play again this term, though.
