Arsenal vs West Ham LIVE!

With Arsene Wenger watching from the stands, Arsenal came from behind to see off West Ham 3-1 at home on Boxing Day and move seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Wenger was back at the Emirates Stadium for the first time since leaving the club in 2018 after 22 years in charge and saw Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah score in a rousing second-half comeback after a Said Benrahma penalty had given West Ham the lead.

The victory maintained Arsenal's 100 per cent home record in the league this season and lifted them to 40 points from 15 games, seven clear of second-placed Newcastle, who have played 16 matches. They are eight ahead of third-placed Manchester City, who have played 14.

Arsenal vs West Ham highlights

  • GOAL! Benrahma buries penalty

  • GOAL! Saka bags leveller

  • GOAL! Martinelli completes turnaround

21:52 , Marc Mayo

88 mins: Martinelli gets the last few minutes off, coming off to a standing ovation to give Vieira a runout.

21:48 , Marc Mayo

85 mins: Arsenal chasing that fourth goal as Dawson throws himself in the way of Odegaard’s latest effort, diverting it behind for a corner.

Saka’s ball in is flicked over by Saliba.

ARSENAL CHANCE!

21:45 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: Martinelli loops a ball across the face of goal but it goes unmet, before West Ham give it away and Odegaard whips a shot wide.

The Norwegian has been everywhere tonight!

21:44 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Arsenal in cruise control as West Ham slow down their press, looking a well-beaten team.

21:41 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Fornals on for Soucek as Moyes makes an attacking change.

21:40 , Marc Mayo

76 mins: Xhaka lines up a free-kick but launches it into the wall, Arsenal come back quickly with Odegaard curling a hit from range just wide.

21:36 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: More good news for Arsenal as Xhaka escapes a blatant booking for rugby-tackling Antonio.

The West Ham protests continue as Zinchenko replaces Tierney.

21:35 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: A sense of game, set and match with that goal.

Arsenal, however, want a fourth.

GGGGOOOOOAAALLLL!!! Arsenal 3-1 West Ham | Nketiah

21:32 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: What a finish!

Odegaard finds Nketiah, who delightfully rolls his marker and buries his shot!

21:28 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: Huge roar from the fans as Saliba sticks in a good block on Antonio’s ball in.

A massive test for West Ham, this.

21:26 , Marc Mayo

62 mins: You wouldn’t bet against Arsenal getting a third here.

Their tails are up with the home fans adorning Arsene Wenger with a chant as he watches on from the stands.

GGGGOOOOOOAAAALLLL!! Arsenal 2-1 West Ham | Martinelli

21:22 , Marc Mayo

58 mins: THE LEADERS TURN IT AROUND!

Martinelli breaks in down the left and slips a cheeky shot home at the near post! Fabianski truly caught out but the Gunners won’t care...

Malik Ouzia at Emirates Stadium

21:21 , Marc Mayo

The crowd are up here and Arsenal are suddenly first to everything. West Ham will do well to weather this.

21:20 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: For all of Arsenal’s intricate play, it’s a scuffed shot that helps them break the deadlock and the Emirates is now really up for it. A sort of pent-up fury behind their chants, now.

Coufal had played Saka onside for the goal which initially looked to be off.

Malik Ouzia at Emirates Stadium

21:18 , Marc Mayo

Typical. Odegaard has tried to play that disguised pass three or four times without success. Then he scuffs one and it comes off a treat.

Didn’t mean that, did he?

GGOOOAAAALL!! Arsenal 1-1 West Ham | Saka

21:16 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: Odegaard’s effort lands at Saka and he rolls it home!

21:15 , Marc Mayo

51 mins: That Arsenal fury with the refereeing decisions, somewhat ironic given Michael Oliver’s wrong call to give them a penalty, heightens as Bowen leaves Tierney on the floor at an aerial duel.

Nothing really in it, in terms of foul play, and the Scot can carry on.

Malik Ouzia at Emirates Stadium

21:12 , Marc Mayo

Thomas Partey spent most of the first few years of his Arsenal career booting balls into the Clock End but all of a sudden that placed effort from the edge of the box has become a bit of a trademark. Good save.

SAVE!

21:11 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Now Arsenal come forward as Fabianski palms Partey’s hit from range wide.

WEST HAM CHANCE!

21:10 , Marc Mayo

46 mins: Antonio gallops away from the defence and fires at Ramsdale from the near post as the pressure builds on his back. A smart stop by the goalkeeper.

Kick off!

21:08 , Marc Mayo

No changes from either sides, West Ham a goal to the good.

Second half coming up!

21:07 , Marc Mayo

The players jog back out, West Ham shooting up to 14th as things stand.

Stats check

21:03 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal dominating the ball with 72 per cent of possession, generating six shots to three.

But only one of those attempts has hit the target for the hosts, compared to two for West Ham - who lead by a goal to nil.

Two corners apiece, nine fouls from the Hammers to five.

First-half highlights

21:00 , Marc Mayo

How West Ham broke the deadlock:

20:56 , Marc Mayo

A tale of two penalty calls.

West Ham won their spot-kick after Saliba was adjudged to have taken Bowen down inches inside his own area, and Benrahma did the rest.

After lots of Arsenal pressure, Odegaard’s shot hit Cresswell to win a penalty for the home team but VAR quickly sent Michael Oliver to the screen to overturn his error.

Half time!

20:53 , Marc Mayo

Boos from the home fans as the first half ends.

West Ham a goal to the good!

NO PENALTY

20:52 , Marc Mayo

45+4 mins: A clear and obvious error, that. Disallowed.

20:50 , Marc Mayo

Oh VAR will really want to check that, it’s clearly off his head.

PENALTY ARSENAL!

20:50 , Marc Mayo

45+3 mins: A handball from Odegaard’s shot!

20:49 , Marc Mayo

45+2 mins: Arsenal on top as the half-time break approaches. Martinelli dances down to the byline and wins a corner...

20:47 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Arsenal fans showing their frustrations with claims against West Ham’s physicality, and Coufal goes through Martinelli after a chunky slide wins the ball.

It leaves his opponent limping and the defender is booked.

Three minutes added on as the free-kick drifts through the crowd and into touch.

20:43 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: Odegaard looks sharp, Rice gets in his face well, the ball goes wide, cross is belted clear. Rinse and repeat.

Malik Ouzia at Emirates Stadium

20:41 , Marc Mayo

The goal has done nothing to change the shape of this game in terms of possession or territory but there is noticeably more energy and belief in West Ham’s closing down.

20:40 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: Some cute build-up play from Arsenal which is kind of exposing the hole left by Gabriel Jesus.

A bit of a lack of cutting edge in the box, the ball reaching Nketiah who ignores Martinelli to fire into a defender.

CHANCE ARSENAL!

20:36 , Marc Mayo

34 mins: Dawson there again as Nketiah pops up in the box yet hesitates before a lay-off to Saka, who just loses out to Dawson as the defender nips in.

20:34 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Every West Ham player bar Paqueta is rushing around putting on the pressure as Arsenal pen them in.

Saka floats in a nice ball but Dawson nods out well.

20:31 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: Arsenal knew they would be tested after the World Cup break but it’s come sooner than they’d have liked.

West Ham have been a real stodgy team to play when losing under Moyes, can he finally get one over the Gunners?

Malik Ouzia at Emirates Stadium

20:29 , Marc Mayo

Well, talk about against the run of play. It’s been one way traffic but West Ham are ahead with a fine penalty from Benrahma.

As has become tradition here this season, conceding the first goal prompts a huge rallying call from the home crowd, whipped up by Mikel Arteta.

GGGOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!! Arsenal 0-1 West Ham | Benrahma

20:28 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Benrahma steps up...

DOWN THE MIDDLE!

PENALTY WEST HAM!

20:26 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: Bowen goes down and Michael Oliver points to the spot!

Saliba just clipped the West Ham winger as he broke into the box. VAR is having a little look though...

Penalty given.

CHANCE ARSENAL!

20:25 , Marc Mayo

23 mins: Saka fantastically heads on Partey’s deep cross and Odegaard is there to fire at goal - but Fabianski denies him!

20:23 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: West Ham’s longest period of pressure yet with successive corners, the second landing for Benrahma on the edge of the box and Ramsdale plucks out his shot.

A quick play the ball sends Nketiah through on the counter but West Ham block his effort.

20:20 , Marc Mayo

19 mins: Lovely football from Arsenal as Xhaka slides in a ball in behind for White to latch onto... a decent low cross is slid out for a corner.

Malik Ouzia at Emirates Stadium

20:18 , Marc Mayo

Martin Odegaard’s first touch is just exquisite. That’s a few times now he’s found a bit of space between the lines but has had to receive the ball at awkward heights or with a bit too much pace on. It doesn’t seem to matter.

20:14 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: Xhaka latches onto Odegaard’s pass and swings a right boot at an effort that dribbles nicely for Fabianski to claim.

20:13 , Marc Mayo

10 mins: A strong first ten minutes for Arsenal but their left flank has been targeted by West Ham, Bowen sending a fine cross in hard and low. Ramsdale palms away.

 (Action Images via Reuters)
(Action Images via Reuters)

20:09 , Marc Mayo

9 mins: An unfortunate first booking of the game as Bowen gets the ball but also lots of man, namely Martinelli.

Malik Ouzia at Emirates Stadium

20:09 , Marc Mayo

A let-off for West Ham and almost the perfect start from Arsenal, who’ve been on the front foot in these first few minutes.

Positive early signs in terms of the link-up between Nketiah and Saka which could be interesting because Jesus has tended to be much stronger linking with Martinelli on the opposite flank.

20:08 , Marc Mayo

7 mins: Correct call.

Saka wasn’t offside as the initial pass came in but he did get a touch to flick it onto the offside Nketiah.

From there, a nice lay-off saw the England winger thrash it home - but it’s chalked off.

GGGGOO-NO!

20:06 , Marc Mayo

4 mins: Arsenal have the ball in the back of the net!

The flag is up though after Saka’s finish but VAR will check that...

Malik Ouzia at Emirates Stadium

20:05 , Marc Mayo

It was a good tackle from Declan Rice on Gabriel Martinelli and I think plenty of West Ham’s players would’ve been happy to play on there but Lukasz Fabianski still has friends in these parts.

20:04 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: A 4-2-3-1 formation for both teams with Nketiah flanked by Martinelli and Saka. Antonio up top for West Ham.

A short break as Martinelli feels the after-effects of a tough but fair challenge from Rice. He’ll carry on.

Kick off!

Moyes a big fan of Arteta

19:27 , Marc Mayo

David Moyes managed Mikel Arteta at Everton and heaped praise on the Arsenal boss ahead of tonight’s match.

“I think the best time to face Arsenal was about three years ago, as since Mikel has come in he's done a brilliant job!

“They've gone against the grain a bit and they've built a very good team.

“As a manager, to get players into management and see them do well is a great thrill. Mikel is always someone who had his own mind, had a really good career, worked under Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola, who is arguably the best manager of this period, so he'll have picked up advice from them.”

The Hammers also welcome two fitness doubts into their line-up.

Aaron Cresswell shakes off a niggle to start at left-back with no Kurt Zouma.

Michail Antonio leads the line in Gianluca Scammaca’s injury - the Italian has an ankle injury.

Arteta on Saliba selection

18:47 , Marc Mayo

William Saliba will be the key name Arsenal fans look out for when their teamsheet drops, having returned to training on Friday after the World Cup final.

“Let’s see depending on how he comes back as well,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta last week.

“We have the data on what he’s done in training in terms of minutes.

“He didn’t participate much but it was a huge experience for him. When he gets back we’ll see.”

Moyes considers Bowen up front

18:42 , Marc Mayo

Jarrod Bowen could be deployed as West Ham’s lead striker tonight if Gianluca Scamacca and Michail Antonio fail late fitness tests.

“Gianluca has got an ankle injury and Mick had a calf strain. We're hoping they both have a chance, but they are doubtful,” manager David Moyes told reporters ahead of the game.

“I think every club is going to have issues with players returning after the World Cup.

“Jarrod [Bowen] is more than capable of playing down the middle. We've done the same with Marko Arnautovic and Michail Antonio, so who says we can't do it with Jarrod?”

Evening Standard score prediction

18:12 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal have been a huge bogey team for West Ham in recent years but the visitors should make things tough for a side shorn of their star forward.

Nonetheless, the Hammers’ own deficiencies in attack will constrict their chances of an upset.

A 1-0 win to Arsenal.

Early West Ham team news

18:02 , Marc Mayo

West Ham are likely to be without Nayef Aguerd after he injured his thigh at the World Cup.

Kurt Zouma is set to miss out after knee surgery last month with Maxwel Cornet (calf) absent and doubts over Aaron Cresswell (hamstring), Gianluca Scamacca (ankle) and Michail Antonio (thigh).

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tierney; Odegaard, Partey, Xhaka; Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli.

Early Arsenal team news

17:51 , Marc Mayo

Mikel Arteta will have to decide whether to start William Saliba, who was only set to return to training for a short period after the World Cup final but should be fresh having played only 27 minutes for France in Qatar.

Gabriel Jesus (knee) and Emile Smith Rowe (groin) are out while Reiss Nelson is also sidelined after going off against Juventus with a hamstring injury.

There are also question marks over Oleksandr Zinchenko (calf) and Takehiro Tomiyasu (hamstring).
