Asprilla watches on as Colombia continue great run
Yaser Asprilla had to settle for the role of spectator as Colombia continued their exceptional run of form with a 2-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening Copa America match in Houston.
The Watford attacking midfielder, who has been capped five times, was an unused substitute as first-half goals from two Crystal Palace players secured a ninth successive victory for the Colombians, who are now unbeaten in more than two years.
They made the breakthrough in the 32nd minute when James Rodriguez whipped in a superb delivery for Daniel Munoz to head home.
Eagles teammate Jefferson Lerma doubled their advantage ten minutes later thanks to another Rodriguez assist, this time from a free-kick.
Paraguay gave themselves hope in the 69th minute when Brighton’s Julio Enciso halved the deficit, but their opponents were able to see out the remainder of the contest in relative comfort.
Colombia's next game in Group D is against Costa Rice on Friday at 11pm UK time.
Asprilla’s Hornets club mate Ismael Kone will be hoping for a better outcome tonight when Canada take on Peru in their second match in Group A, having been beaten 2-0 by Argentina in their opening fixture on Thursday.
This match also kicks off at 11pm UK time.
