Aston Villa Fan View: Villans finally on track

One loss in 12 for Aston Villa and six points off top spot, represents a steady turn in fortune for Steve Bruce as a 2-0 away win at Preston in midweek shows just how far Villa have come in a short amount of time. Preston had only lost twice at home in 2017, and Villa won comfortably, which shows you the swagger that we are starting to see.

A few days before was the Birmingham City game, Villa lacked any kind of swagger, but derby day is a funny game, and the fact it was followed up with such an impressive win against Preston, we can all just move on.

One thing I really have noticed about the Championship is how important momentum is. With so many games, and with so many rivals jockeying for position, consistent form is so key. In a league where anyone can win, and the likes of Bristol City and Cardiff are showing exactly this, Villa’s recent good form has to be the rule rather than the exception.

Villa are no longer a ‘No Kodjia, no party’ team. Young Kienan Davis led the line superbly on against Preston whilst Kodjia sat on the sidelines nursing an injury. The midfielders are also sharing the goalscoring burden, with Robert Snodgrass and Albert Adomah continuing their rich vein of form.

On Saturday, Villa welcome Sheffield Wednesday, who haven’t got going in the same way they did last season. They have only won one away game all season, so this represents the perfect opportuntity to keep our unbeaten run at home.

There are still 30 games left, so its a long hard slog, but Villa have the depth of squad to continue to churn the results out. Injuries to Josh Onomah, Robert Snodgrass and Jonathan Kodjia means the likes of Jack Grealish and young Callum O’Hare may get a chance at the weekend to impress.

Once all fit, Bruce will struggle to keep all his squad happy, and I am sure with January on the horizon we will see a few more faces leave. But before then, a hectic Christmas schedule will be so important for Villa’s promotion hopes, and another home win on Saturday is just what is needed.
