Atletico Madrid vs Manchester City LIVE!

Manchester City produced a disciplined performance to secure a fractious 0-0 draw at Atletico Madrid and reach the Champions League semi-finals 1-0 on aggregate.

Tensions boiled over in the closing stages and Atletico defender Felipe was sent off after receiving a second yellow card before the teams played out 12 minutes of added time.

Scuffles broke out among the players following Felipe’s dismissal for kicking out at Phil Foden and continued after the final whistle as the teams went down the tunnel.

The English champions were comfortable in the first half, Ilkay Gundogan striking the post with their best chance after a flowing move down the right, but they did not manage another attempt on goal the rest of the game.

The visitors were patient, slowing down the pace of the game and running down the clock to the displeasure of Atletico manager Diego Simeone and the vociferous crowd at Metropolitano stadium.

Atletico threatened to score the goal that would have taken the game into extra time, going close through Angel Correa and Matheus Cunha, but were unable to break down the City defence despite creating several good chances.

Match report

23:05 , Matt Verri

Manchester City booked their place in the Champions League semi-finals for a second consecutive season as a goalless draw against Atletico Madrid in the second leg did the job.

Pep Guardiola’s side arrived at the Wanda Metropolitano with a 1-0 lead from the first leg and it remained nervy throughout in Madrid as they struggled to kill off the tie.

Atletico kept it tight for the first half and then increasingly put the pressure on after the break, with Antoine Griezmann, Matheus Cunha and Angel Correa all going close.

But the home side could not find the goal they needed to level things up on aggregate and were a man down for stoppage-time after Felipe was shown a second yellow card. There were 12 minutes of stoppage time played as Atletico looked for a fight at every opportunity in an ugly conclusion.

City booked their place in the last-four where they will face Real Madrid, keeping their hopes of a first Champions League title alive.

22:53 , Matt Verri

Rio Ferdinand slammed Atletico Madrid’s “distasteful behaviour” during the clash tonight.

“Distasteful behaviour from the Atletico players, they should be embarrassed with some of the antics they have gone on with,” Ferdinand said.

Pep Guardiola on battling triumph

22:42 , Matt Verri

“It is the champion of Spain and they played with energy and in second half were better than us and we were lucky we didn’t concede.

“In the first half we had chances, overall we are in the semi-finals - it is well deserved.

“The opponent is so tough, all the teams in Champions League come here an suffer so it is important we go through.”

John Stones’ reaction...

22:33 , Matt Verri

“We know that they sometimes try and make things happen like that and we dealt with it really well, it is not nice to talk about and I don’t want to dwell on it because over the two legs we played incredible against such an experienced side in what they do, we kept our tempers and it is easy to get drawn into stuff like that.

“We knew it was not an easy place to come, it is a hostile environment, it was a difficult night all round and how we defended and controlled ourselves over the two legs was incredible.”

Good effort

22:30 , Matt Verri

22:24 , Matt Verri

Savic dragged Foden off the pitch, headbutted Sterling and pulled Grealish’s hair in the space of about 30 seconds.

Miraculous that he avoided a red. Sounds like he and Grealish clashed in the tunnel post-match too.

Job done.. just!

AND CITY HAVE DONE IT!

Wow. That was 102 minutes of chaos. Atletico threw everything at Man City late on, quite literally, but it wasn’t enough.

City march on and they will return to Madrid in the last-four - Real next up for them.

22:02 , Matt Verri

90+12 mins: WHAT A SAVE!

Stunning from Ederson. This is absolute carnage in the final few seconds, Correa so close to sending it to extra time.

22:00 , Matt Verri

90+10 mins: Fernandinho has gone down off the ball, not sure there’s too much wrong with him.

Simeone has now charged onto the pitch... he’s lost his head! In fact it’s his own player he’s picking a fight with! Savic is on the receiving end of the outburst.

Atletico manager gets a yellow card for his troubles, Foden can’t stop laughing.

21:58 , Matt Verri

90+8 mins: Whipped in, so much pace... Ederson does brilliantly to punch it away.

Long throw coming in for Atletico though. They’ve still got a chance.

21:57 , Matt Verri

90+7 mins: Add another to the list! Cancelo into the book.

Carrasco drives inside, inches away from getting into the box when Cancelo lunges in to bring him down.

Huge chance for Atletico this.

21:56 , Matt Verri

90+6 mins: GREAT SAVE!

Gundogan through but he’s denied by Oblak. That really would have settled it.

Foden now shown a yellow card for stopping Atletico from taking a quick free-kick. Referee is rapidly losing control!

21:54 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Well we’ve got at least another six minutes of added time to be played on.

Mahrez has been booked for time-wasting, while Atletico continue to look for a fight at every opportunity. Chaos.

21:52 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Savic with a yellow card, Ake also into the book.

And Felipe has been sent off! His third red card of the season. That’s been coming from pretty much the first second of the match. Caught Foden late, not sure why he’s complaining.

Savic could easily have seen a straight red, replays suggest he headbutted a City player.

21:49 , Matt Verri

89 mins: This final whistle cannot come soon enough for the visitors.

Carrasco cuts the ball back, Suarez looks set to get on the end of it but decides to dummy it... nobody there behind him to finish.

Foden now down after getting caught. Savic comes flying across and drags him up, starts a melee involving all the players and both benches.

21:47 , Matt Verri

87 mins: SENSATIONAL BLOCK!

City hanging on for dear life. Correa in behind, lays the ball back... Cunha with a powerful strike but Stones is in just the right place.

Savic wins the header from a corner, loops up, nearly turned in at the back post! City survive.

21:44 , Matt Verri

84 mins: This is going to be a painful last few minutes for City.

Suarez driving at the defence, looks to knock it past Stones but just overruns the ball. Ake across on the cover.

21:42 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Well then, it’s Luis Suarez time!

Lemar off. Felix also replaced, Cunha on. Simeone has to throw everything at it now.

21:41 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Fernandinho cleaned out, knew exactly what he was doing there to draw that foul.

Mahrez swing sit into the box, Felipe up well to head the danger away.

21:38 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Pep doesn’t know when Fernandinho will leave City, but he does know he needs him now.

Silva off, Fernandinho on. Visitors just want to shut this match down, Brazilian will certainly help that.

21:37 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Penalty appeals from Atletico as Correa goes down. No penalty... maybe a bit fortunate, Cancelo.

De Paul has a wild swing at a volley, slices it wide.

21:36 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Carrasco with his first chance to run at Cancelo, cuts inside and Silva is there to help out his teammate.

City finding it more and more difficult to get out... this is exactly what Atletico wanted. Still right in it going into the final 15 minutes.

21:33 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Walker has gone down again, no way he can carry on. Hasn’t moved well at all.

Atletico fans less than impressed. Ake comes on to replace him.

21:30 , Matt Verri

70 mins: DE PAUL NEARLY WITH HIS FIRST TOUCH!

Sensational from Felix, nutmegs Rodri and sets Atletico away. Llorente then cuts it back to De Paul who looks to whip it into the near post, can’t quite bring it back though.

21:29 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Carrasco, De Paul, Correa on, Greizman, Lodi, Koke off.

Triple change from Atletico as they look to make a late charge. Walker still looks in a lot pain, but he’s going to come back on.

21:27 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Walker smashes the ball into Lodi and then goes down, looks in a lot of pain. Didn’t look to be a huge amount of contact, maybe just winded.

De Bruyne getting ice applied to his right ankle on the bench, explains that change.

21:24 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Walker’s pace is ridiculous.

Griezmann plays the long switch out to the left, Felix briefly thinks he’s in but Walker then turns on the speed and busts back to chest the ball to Ederson.

First City sub of the night - De Bruyne off, Sterling on.

21:22 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Greizmann leads the Atletico charge on the right, pokes it through to Llorente. Sees he’s overhit the pass and then goes down claiming a foul.

Referee not falling for that.

21:20 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Koke has space in midfield, Lodi and Felix making runs on the left.

Panics, tries to play the ball quickly and lobs it straight through to Ederson. Pretty sure that wasn’t the plan.

21:17 , Matt Verri

57 mins: JUST WIDE!

Felix sets the ball back, Griezmann on the half-volley slices across it and it flies just wide of the far post. Great effort.

21:16 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Lovely cross whipped in by Llorente, Walker misreads the flight of it and Felix wins the header at the back post. Can’t get up enough though to direct it.

Atletico having their best spell of the tie now. At last some pressure being put on the City defence. Lodi with the cutback into the box, Gundogan tracks back to clear.

21:14 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Felix with a great run, Laporte lets him go - strike can’t quite get on the end of the cross.

Atletico fans trying to get involved, responding every time their side presses up high.

21:10 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Sustained City possession, slowing things down. That is until Rodri passes it straight to Griezmann.

Brief couple of minutes of intensity at the start of Atletico, but on the whole they’re still very happy to sit back.

21:07 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Griezmann running in behind, tries to get the shot away and it rolls behind... did it get a touch from Laporte? Yes it did, corner Atletico.

Felipe throws himself at it, City clear it. Savic then with a big challenge on Mahrez and the home side can come again.

Back underway!

21:05 , Matt Verri

Up and running again in Madrid!

21:01 , Matt Verri

One shot from Atletico so far, both in this half and the tie as a whole. Not great in 135 minutes of action.

At some point they’re going to have to throw caution to the wind - imagine it won’t be for a while yet though.

As close as either side came...

20:57 , Matt Verri

HT: Atletico Madrid 0-0 Manchester City

20:49 , Matt Verri

135 minutes of the tie played, still City have that narrow 1-0 lead on advantage.

Not a huge amount of action in Madrid so far - Gundogan struck the woodwork with a low shot but that was about it.

Atletico will be satisfied that they’re still in it. Foden getting lots of attention, been a painful half for him.

(REUTERS)

20:46 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Three minutes added on.

Just the four players surrounding the referee, as Stones fouls Felix. Great turn from the striker and he was brought down.

Home players demand a yellow card - they do not get their wish.

20:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Twice Oblak has come for a corner now, twice he has got nowhere near.

About three players end up on the floor claiming a foul, nothing given. Atletico head it away.

20:43 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Ball running harmlessly out of play, Savic takes a five-yard detour to give Foden a shove towards the hoardings.

Atletico trying their best to rile the City players, but no sign of frustration yet from the visitors.

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: City seeing plenty of the ball now, Atletico getting very little joy.

Foden now gets to the byline, but has to turn back and is forced to play the pass to the halfway line. While it’s 1-0 on aggregate, Atletico really are right in this. Obviously.

20:38 , Matt Verri

37 mins: What is Felipe doing?!

This time he dives in to challenge Gundogan from behind, referee allows play to continue though. Atletico man is well on his way to a red card.

20:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Better from Atletico, they’ve got plenty of bodies forward in the attack.

Kondogbia tries his luck from range, deflected and it’s a comfortable enough save for Ederson.

20:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Lodi breaking free down the left, plays it into the box but Stones has that under control.

Mahrez did well to track back too. City gradually taking control of this match, crowd not quite as involved.

20:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: ABSOLUTE CHAOS!

Stunning ball from Mahrez in behind sets Walker free. He cuts it back, Foden lays it off to Gundogan... hits the post. Back to Gundogan, header is blocked.

De Bruyne then tries to get on the end of it, brought down? No penalty.

20:28 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Foden shot... blocked. De Bruyne shot... blocked.

Belgian caught the volley so sweetly, but Reinildo threw himself in the way to block. Mahrez swings the corner in, Oblak makes a mess of it but his defenders do the job.

20:25 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Well, the referee has had enough! It’s taken 24 minutes.

Felipe has been clattering everyone in sight from the first whistle, and this time he goes straight through De Bruyne. Yellow card for the defender and that’s very much been coming.

20:23 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Referee has very little interest in giving any free-kicks tonight... consistent for both sides at least.

Felix is working very hard up front for Atletico, but it’s often just a one-man press.

20:20 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Great from Ederson, rushes off his line to head the ball away as Felix looked to be in behind.

Llorente then clips a cross into the box, it’s headed clear and Mahrez sets De Bruyne away on the break.

Wide to Silva, just Savic to beat... can’t do it. Defender does the job.

20:17 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Mahrez thinks he’s been cleaned out by Lodi, referee waves away his appeals.

City trying to just keep possession at the moment, take the sting out of this match both on and off the pitch.

20:16 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Looks like there was blood coming from Foden’s head, he’s being bandaged up.

Atletico fans and their boos are getting even louder. Man City man is up now, he’ll be ok to continue for now.

20:13 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Really poor from Felipe, challenges Foden in the air and gives him an almighty shove as he goes through him.

Surely a yellow card? No, just a free-kick. City bench are furious. Foden looks in a lot of pain on the floor.

20:11 , Matt Verri

10 mins: This will be a corner though - Silva’s cross deflected behind.

Decent chance too! De Bruyne whips it in, Stones gets up well at the near post but heads over the bar. Was certainly having his shirt pulled as he jumped.

20:09 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Very optimistic from Gundogan.

At least 25 yards out, looks to curl an effort into the far corner but it’s well wide. He thinks it took a deflection, which it did... goal-kick given though.

20:06 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Atletico with a decent attack, ball fizzed into the box and Lemar nearly takes it in his stride. Can’t gather it though.

City have space to break into and do so quickly. Mahrez drifts past a couple of challenges, should really slide Silva in but the pass is cut out. Real waste.

20:05 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Rodri caught on the ball by Kondogbia and then commits the foul. Atletico players immediately call for a yellow card, which the referee ignores.

Going to be a long night for the official!

20:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Already more pressing from Atletico than we saw in the entire fist leg. And no sign of the 5-5-0 formation.

Frantic start to the match, De Bruyne closing down the Atletico defence quickly too. Lemar clips a nice ball over the top, Walker is there though to head back to Ederson.

KICK-OFF!

20:00 , Matt Verri

We are underway at the Wanda Metropolitano!

19:58 , Matt Verri

The Champions League anthem has been played... I think. Boos completely drown it out, would be fair to say the Atletico fans were not singing along.

Quickly replaced by chants of ‘Atleti, Atleti’.

19:57 , Matt Verri

Here we go...

Players are out onto the pitch. Brilliant atmosphere as you’d expect - this is going to be a real test for City.

19:52 , Matt Verri

How do Atletico approach this?

Cautiously, you’d imagine. Simeone won’t be too unhappy if it’s still goalless on the night at half-time.

But at some point they will have to go for it - Lemar in midfield suggests the home side might look to be a bit more positive. City won’t mind that though, will give them more space to work with.

Just over 10 minutes to go...

19:48 , Matt Verri

Trippier: Atletico want to wind players up

19:40 , Matt Verri

Kieran Trippier knows better than most how Atletico prepare for a big match and he’s predicting that the home side will be looking to get under City’s skin from the first minute.

“I loved playing for Simeone and thriving off defending,” Tripper told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I improved massively playing for him. He is a special guy. Many people watch the odd game, but in La Liga they play totally different football, but against the top teams you need to be more defensive minded. It’s not fair talking about the dark arts and him.

“When we used to play Liverpool and Chelsea he would tell us to get in their faces and wind them up. They want to wind players up. From minute one he will be asking for yellow cards from the touchline and the players will be winding up others.

“He wants players to get around the ref. Savic will be the big one tonight, he will be in Man City’s faces.”

Ton up

19:32 , Matt Verri

Far more important things for City to be worrying about, but a nice stat.

Victory tonight would put them one behind Real’s record. Sure not many at the club will be too upset if they draw and go through...

Up next...

Reminder that the winner of this tie will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

Safe to say neither Guardiola or Simeone will be particularly popular at the Bernabeu.

Thrilling match between Real and Chelsea last night - Spanish side showed their strengths but also how vulnerable they can be.

Koke: I love the way we play

19:08 , Matt Verri

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke has played down any criticism of his side’s style of play, after Guardiola commented on their 5-5-0 shape used for much of the first leg.

“Each one has their own game philosophy, I like the way City plays,” Koke said.

“I love the way Atleti play, with that passion, that grit, with people who have given everything. I love both styles.

“We have a plan and we are within that plan. We made a great effort there, we know that City manages games with possession and then attacking in small spaces.

“We are committed to winning the game, those who speak from outside let the want, we have our plan and we are going to try to execute it.”

For Atletico Madrid, Lemar starts in midfield while Llorente is preferred at right wing-back to Vrsaljko. Lodi and Savic are both fit to start, while Suarez has to settle for a place on the bench.

Foden starts for Man City after his impressive cameo in the first leg, while Walker returns to the side after suspension. Dias returns and is among the substitutes, as is Grealish who spent 20 minutes getting kicked at every opportunity by Atletico last week.

Reminder of how the first leg went...

18:36 , Matt Verri

Kevin De Bruyne struck a crucial second-half winner to give Manchester City a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Etihad.

The first leg of the Champions League quarter-final was a tight affair, with City dominating the ball but finding it tough to break through a typically dogged display from Diego Simeone’s side.

With 20 minutes remaining though, De Bruyne finished cooly past Jan Oblak to give City a narrow lead to take to Madrid.

Fernandinho surprises Guardiola with news

18:20 , Matt Verri

Fernandinho is planning to leave Manchester City this summer - much to the surprise of manager Pep Guardiola.

The versatile Brazilian stalwart and club captain signed a new 12-month contract at Etihad Stadium last summer to extend his stay at the club to nine years, having made 373 appearances since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in a £34million deal back in 2012.

Asked if he expected to stay put for next season, the 36-year-old told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday: “No, I want to play regularly. I will go back to Brazil. I decided with my family, which is the most important for me.”

That revelation was news to Guardiola, who addressed the assembled media slightly after Fernandinho in advance of City’s Champions League quarter-final second-leg tie against Atletico Madrid.

“Oh! I didn’t know,” Guardiola said. “You give me the news. I didn’t hear it. We will see what happens. I don’t know what will happen. He is so important. I’ll ask him.

“At the end of the season we talk, maybe it’s because of his family. I would love it. We will talk.”

Prediction

18:13 , Matt Verri

The onus is on Los Rojiblancos to get a result in front of their own fans, and they will have a better go at it than back in Manchester.

But, City are themselves fearsome on the break and should be able to get the job done with room to spare.

Man City to win, 2-0.

Man City team news

18:05 , Matt Verri

City came through the Liverpool draw with no fresh injury concerns and have Kyle Walker back from suspension tonight, after he was absent for three games following a red card against RB Leipzig in the final group-stage match.

In what is a huge boost for Guardiola’s side, Ruben Dias has travelled with the squad as he continues his recovery from a thigh injury.

Cole Palmer is expected to miss out again, meanwhile.

Renan Lodi and Hector Herrera sat out Atletico’s defeat at the weekend against Mallorca and remain major doubts for this game.

Stefan Savic overcame a knock to feature and should make the lineup tonight.
