Australian Open LIVE: Daniil Medvedev vs Felix Auger-Aliassime match result after five-set thriller

Daniil Medvedev saved a match point and recovered from two sets to love down to defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime and reach his fifth grand slam semi-final.

The world number two is looking to become the first man in the Open era to follow a first grand slam title by winning the next major tournament but his chances were hanging by a thread when Canadian Auger-Aliassime won the first two sets.

Medvedev hit back to take the third but went match point down at 4-5 in the fourth only to save it with a big serve, take the set and clinch a 6-7 (4) 3-6 7-6 (2) 7-5 6-4 victory after four hours and 42 minutes.

The Russian now faces a rematch of last year’s semi-final against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Daniil Medvedev said he told himself that when he was being outplayed by Auger-Aliassime. Boos ring around the Rod Laver Arena at the mention of Djokovic’s name.

Now it’s 15-30 though as Medvedev goes into the net!

Oh, a little fortunate for the Russian as Auger-Aliassime’s forehand clips the top of the net and bounces out on Medvedev’s side of the court.

But that’s another huge forehand from Auger-Aliassime and it brings up break point!

A big Medvedev serve looks to stunt the momentum of Auger-Aliassime after that amazing point but the Canadian keeps his hopes alive by getting to 30-30.

That’s a poor forehand from Auger-Aliassime, though. And Medvedev doesn’t need a second invitation as he sees out the hold with a couple of clinical backhands.

Auger Aliassime reached the semi-finals of the US Open before losing to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

He is yet to win an ATP Tour title, although that does not quite reflect his consistency in recent times.

Nevertheless, Medvedev will be very confident he can move past the Canadian and set up a clash with Stefano Tsitsipas in the last four.
