B-G/A/H's Florance captures third state wrestling title

Feb. 26—Darren Florance of Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville won a state wrestling championship for the third year in a row Sunday at MVP Arena in Albany.

Florance captured the state title at 116 pounds after winning at 110 pounds in 2023 and 102 pounds in 2022.

He notched victories by pin in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches before defeating South Jefferson's Brock Frederick by a 3-1 decision in the championship bout.

TJ O'Connor of Cooperstown/Milford placed fourth overall in the 152-pound weight class.

O'Connor won by pin in the quarterfinals before losing by pin in the semifinals. He earned a spot in the third-place match by defeating Waylan Winseman of Honeoye Falls-Lima by a 5-1 decision in the consolation semifinals.

He ended the weekend by falling to Gouverneur's Vandavian Way in the third-place match by a 9-5 decision.

Caleb Cole of Unatego/Unadilla Valley earned an eighth-place finish at 124 pounds after going 1-3 in his matches over the weekend.

Other local wrestlers competing in Albany were Sidney's Caden Higley (1-2 at 101 pounds), U/UV's Brogan Lefever (2-2 at 101 pounds), Abdul-Jamil Zaggout (1-2 at 131 pounds) and Wyatt Meade (2-2 at 152 pounds) and Oneonta's Jayden Zakala (1-2 at 215 pounds).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Edmeston/Morris 57, Charlotte Valley 26 (Friday)

The Edmeston/Morris girls basketball team cruised to a 57-26 win over Charlotte Valley in the quarterfinal round of the Section IV Class D tournament Friday in Edmeston.

Molly Rifanburg tallied a game-high 20 points while Haylie Lund added 15 points and Brenna Bolton netted eight points in the win.

Ella Gerster was the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 10 points.

Top-seeded E/M improves to 18-2 and will take on fourth-seeded Schenevus in the semifinals Tuesday at SUNY Delhi.

Charlotte Valley concludes its season with a 12-8 record.

Bainbridge-Guilford couldn't recover from a slow start in Friday's 42-20 loss to Watkins Glen in the Section IV Class C Quarterfinals.

The Lady Bobcats fell behind 15-0 in the first quarter and weren't able to find enough offense to mount a comeback.

Jayslin Henderson and Johnna Henderson each scored six points for B-G.

The Bobcats finish the season with a record of 12-9.
