Back from the Brink, Frank Mir Draws UFC Main Event Versus Todd Duffee
Skidding into his last fight on a four-fight losing streak, former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir is back from the brink to headline UFC Fight Night San Diego.
Mir steps into the UFC Fight Night 72 main event opposite rising knockout artist Todd Duffee. UFC officials late Wednesday confirmed the news reported earlier on UFC Tonight.
Mir (17-9) has been fighting in the Octagon since 2001. He has held the UFC heavyweight championship, as well as the interim version of that title. But he also had lost four consecutive bouts heading into his UFC Fight Night 61 headliner versus Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
His back against the well, facing Silva on his home turf in Brazil, Mir surprised many with his stellar striking. He knocked Silva out one minute forty seconds into the fight, not only ensuring his spot on the roster, but securing the main event slot in San Diego.

Duffee had rocketed to an impressive 8-2 record in his first 10 fights by knocking out his opponent in all eight victories. Shortly after his tenth bout, however, an injury sidelined him for an extended period before he was diagnosed with a condition called Paronage Turner Syndrome.
The diagnosis was supposed to have sidelined him for a couple of years, but Duffee returned to training within six months and then knocked out Anthony Hamilton a few months later.
Now sporting a 9-2 record with 9 knockouts, Duffee asked for a fight that would put him on the radar should he win. The UFC responded with the main event slot against Mir.
UFC Fight Night 71 takes place on July 15 at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.
