WEYMOUTH Walking Football Club is celebrating a maiden piece of silverware after conquering all comers in the Europa Conference Cup at Blackpool.

Weymouth took two squads to Lancashire, aptly named Clarets and Blues.

However, they were drawn against each other in the last 16, only for the Blues to emerge victorious on penalties.

Blues then defeated teams from Wrexham and Cambridgeshire in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively to set up a sweet final with Cadbury Athletic, from Birmingham.

In the final, Blues required a late equaliser from Lee Worsely to force a sudden-death penalty shootout as the Terras came out on top, Karl Stanton scoring the winning spot-kick.

This was the club’s first tournament outside of Dorset and featured players ranging from 53 to 72 years old across the two squads.

Blues player Nick Smith told Echosport: “Having joined Weymouth Walking Football Club four years ago, whilst we play against other Dorset clubs during the football season, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience playing against teams up and down the UK at AFC Blackpool's ground.

“Winning the trophy has finally put Weymouth Walking Football team on the map and the organisers were delighted that having travelled so far that we managed to win our first trophy.”

Weymouth plan to return to defend their title in June 2025.
