Rangers Fan View: Back to reality with a bump

Graeme Murty called this latest shocking Ibrox display “a reality check.” That’s exactly what it was – a big, fat dose of reality. It was the polar opposite of the three previous away games and something similar to the win over Ross County performance-wise. The outcome, however, would be completely different. We would be beaten 3-1 by St Johnstone and we did absolutely deserve nothing from the game.

I gave Murty praise for his tactical changes in the previous matches, but unfortunately, I feel he got this one completely wrong. For a start, I thought he got it wrong with the 4-3-3 shape. I think he should have stuck with the diamond and went with Pena or Herrera or even Kranjcar in the starting line-up.

The midfield was the issue for the most part. We had Ross McCrorie holding, and Ryan Jack and Holt in there too. But there was not enough coming from Jack or Holt in terms of linking the midfield with Morelos – apart from our goal – that was pretty much it.

Another issue that got to me was the use or in this case misuse of Josh Windass. I am far from being his biggest fan. That being said, I have no idea why he was removed from the striking berth alongside Morelos and shunted back to the left wing. The boy has been on fire in that central role and it was no surprise at all that, in being stuck out wide, he had his worst game in weeks.

I just have no idea what Murty was thinking. None at all. If he didn’t want to use the Mexicans or Kranjcar from the start, he could have played Barjonas at the top of the diamond. I found the whole day, from a tactical perspective, utterly bizarre.

For the goals against, they were all shambolic, every one of them. I would go through them individually but I would be here all day picking through the faults.

But this leads me on to the board. They have no choice other than to go out and get a manager in time for the winter break. Frankly, they should feel ashamed of themselves at this time. We now have gone two months without a permanent manager, while they pinned all their hopes on the 20s manager pulling them out a hole.

It was clear to me that Murty wasn’t good enough to take the full-time position in his first spell, so it should also have been 100% clear to them. Instead, they got rejected by a guy who wasn’t good enough for the job. Now, they are presiding over this complete shambles.

It’s not the fans’ fault they have no idea what they are doing, nor is it the fault of the players. The only fault on the players’ behalf is that they should be winning games at Ibrox. But this board have no safety net anymore. It may have been a dose of reality for the fans and the players, but it should be one massive wakeup call to those who are looking like they aren’t competent enough to run a bath, never mind a football club.
