Baggies in danger of being cut adrift ahead of tough Chelsea fixture

West Brom find themselves bottom of the Premier League and seven points from safety.
West Brom find themselves bottom of the Premier League and seven points from safety.

Despite the poor run of results in the opening months of Premier League season, I was always confident that West Brom would be able to get out of trouble. Then, after the sacking of former coach Tony Pulis, I was again feeling confident that we would avoid the drop. Even after Alan Pardew’s tenure started slowly, I was still quietly confident that we would have enough to stay in the top flight.

This weekend, with most of the teams around us getting positive results, the now seven-point gap to Premier League safety has left me feeling dazed and shocked, like I’ve been hit by a heavyweight boxer’s right hook. West Brom were never supposed to be in this position. This is their eighth successive season in the top flight of English football, an outfit who were previously known as a ‘yo-yo’ club, were now an established and secure mid-table team. However, the truth is that no-one is too good to go down.

Whether it’s the number of poor signings that have been made in the last few years, the stagnation and ageing of an already old squad or the performances on the pitch, the whole club haven’t performed to the level that is required.

Some of the issues have been addressed. The negative and uninspiring Tony Pulis was sacked, a genuine goalscorer in Daniel Sturridge was acquired in the January transfer window and our lack of creativity should finally be solved with the return of both James Morrison and Nacer Chadli from injury.

With the table as it stands, it looks likely that we will be relegated come the end of the season. But things can change very quickly in this division, and we’ve been playing well in the last few weeks without getting the results we deserve. There’s always a team that goes on a brilliant run and avoids relegation, like Wigan or Sunderland in recent seasons, why can’t it be us? Lets get behind the lads, and give this a right good go, starting with Chelsea on Monday.
