Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara could be set for a return to Barcelona should his former boss Hansi Flick be confirmed in charge at the Catalan giants.

Thiago is leaving the Reds this summer having reached the end of the four-year deal he penned when arriving from Bayern Munich in September 2020.

And the 33-year-old has emerged as a possible target for Barcelona, who this week told Thiago's former team-mate Xavi he will leave as head coach after the La Liga season finishes on Sunday with Flick expected to be announced as his replacement.

Flick was most recently in charge of the Germany national team before being sacked last year and was Bayern boss when Thiago was part of the team that won the Champions League in 2020.

And reports in Spain have indicated the departing Liverpool midfielder is wanted on Barcelona's new-look backroom staff, partly because his ability to speak both German and Spanish would act as a link between the incoming head coach and the squad.

However, it suggests the move could be complicated by Thiago's desire to keep playing at a high level, with Javi Martinez and Marc Bartra also options for the Spanish side.
