Hungary striker Barnabas Varga has shared an update on his condition following a worrying injury in his nation’s Euro 2024 clash against Scotland on Sunday night.

The player was injured in the second half as a Hungary free kick was launched into the box. Varga was in the crowd of players attacking the ball when he appeared to clash into the arm of Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

The forward was shown lying motionless on the floor as his teammates and the medical team rushed over to help him. Officials held up screens around the player while he received lengthy treatment on the pitch before being transferred to a stretcher and taken to hospital.

The incident did prompt a check by VAR for a penalty, but it was completed before play restarted. Hungary went on to win the match 1-0 thanks to a dramatic late winner from Kevin Csoboth in the 10th minute of added time, a goal that knocked Scotland out of the tournament at the group stage.

During the celebrations after the full-time whistle, Hungary players were seen with Varga’s shirt as they showed support to their teammate. The Hungarian FA released a statement confirming that Varga had suffered several broken bones in his face and was likely to have to undergo surgery.

The player himself has now shared a positive update from his wife on social media. Varga reposted a picture showing the two holding hands while in hospital, the caption translates as: "Thank you for your kind, supportive messages.
