Barry Ferguson pinpoints one James Tavernier Rangers transfer caveat as Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq rumours won't go away

Barry Ferguson reckons James Tavernier could be sold on a Rangers exit for Saudi riches - if he feels he's finished at this level.

The Ibrox captain was previously linked with a potential move to Al-Ettifaq to join forces with former manager Steven Gerrard with whom he won the Premiership title back in 2021. The pair enjoyed a good working relationship and in recent days that link has reared its head again which leads Ferguson to believe there may well be truth to the rumour.

Tavernier, Ferguson insists, still has unfinished business at Gers with silverware always on the line in front of a packed out house every second weekend. But speaking on GO Radio the former skipper believes Tavernier could still make the move if he feels the time is right to call it in Glasgow.

"It would be depending on how I felt", he said. "If you felt you could still make a contribution to the team, you would stay at Rangers because you want to try and win trophies and play in front of 50,000 fans. But there comes a stage where even though your head can still do it, your legs just start to give up.

"I don't think James Tavernier is at that stage because there is still a lot of football in him, but it might not come around again. I'm sure he'll sit down and discuss it with his advisors and see what happens going forward."

On the move itself, Ferguson added: "The rumours that started last summer have not gone away. They came again in the January window have now resurfaced in the last couple of days, so there must be some truth in it.

"I think it will come down to what James Tavernier wants to do. He still has another two years left on his contract. But we all know what kind of money is in Saudi Arabia. It could be life-changing. So it will be interesting to see what happens come the end of the season."
