Baseball: Tigers rally past Pirates in opener

Apr. 4—LAWRENCEBURG — A 3-run bottom of the fifth for the Tigers allowed Lawrenceburg to rally past Greensburg 4-3 in the season opener for the Pirates.

Greensburg opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Justin Adkins drew a walk to start the inning. Adkins stole second base. With two outs, Ethan Smith singled to move Adkins to third. Adkins came in to score the first run of the game.

Lawrenceburg tied the game in the home-half of the second with Logan Ahaus driving in J.P. Izzo with a two-out double.

In the top of the fourth, Adkins singled and moved to second on Cy Miller's hit by pitch. Adkins stole third and scored on a Tiger error. Greensburg led 2-1 after four.

The Pirates added a run in the top of the fifth to lead 3-1. With two outs, Caleb Greiwe reached on an error. After stealing second, Greiwe scored as Jacoby Miller reached on another error.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ahaus and Tyler Abbott both drew walks. With two outs, Caden Baker doubled to score Ahaus. After a walk to Nolan McLane, Dustin Shaw singled to drive in Abbott. A bases loaded walk to Noah Redar forced in Baker with the go-ahead and winning run.

No more runs were scored as the Tigers escaped with the 4-3 win.

For the Pirates, Cy Miller, Bryson Kelso, Smith, Greiwe, Adkins and Jacoby Miller all had a single.

Greiwe pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits and five walks while striking out four. Kelso pitched 1.1 innings, allowing no run and no hits while walking one.

The Pirates host Lawrenceburg Thursday.

Connersville 7, Batesville 6

CONNERSVILLE — The host Spartans plated six runs in the bottom of the third inning to grab the lead for good in knocking off Batesville 7-6.

The Bulldogs (1-1) scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Dane Dudley doubled and advanced to third on a fly out by Chris Lewis. Jack Grunkemeyer doubled to drive in the first run. Eli Loichinger drove in Grunkemeyer with a single to make it 2-0.

Batesville added two more runs in the top of the second to push the lead to 4-0. Carson Schneider doubled to start the inning. Josh Borgman reached on a fielder's choice and both runners moved up a base on a Alex Krekeler sacrifice. A Dudley single scored Schneider and Borgman.

The Spartans put one run on the board in the third with Landon Lykins driving in Zaine Bentley with a sacrifice fly. After the Bulldogs went scoreless in the top of the third, the Spartans scored six to lead 7-4. Parker Flanigan drove in three runs and Bentley drove in two runs.

Batesville added a run in the fourth on a Dudley sacrifice fly to score Schneider. The Bulldogs scored one in the sixth on a Dudley double to score Krekeler. That was all for the Bulldogs as the Spartans held on for the 7-6 win.

Dudley led the offense with three hits and four RBIs. Loichinger and Schneider both had two hits. Grunkemeyer and Brayden Maple both had one hit.

Batesville's junior varsity opened the season with a 10-0 win over Connersville.

Cayden Drake twirled a complete game one-hit shutout for the Bulldogs and struck out 13 batters in the process. Mason Jones paced the hitting efforts with a 3-for-4 evening that included a double, two RBIs and two runs. Damian Krekeler had two hits, an RBI and a run scored while Rylan Yeager, Keegan Walke, Drake, Brad Tekulve and William Huber each had a base hit. Walke tied Jones for team-high honors with two runs scored.

JCD 4, South Decatur 1

OSGOOD — The host Eagles grabbed a 3-0 lead after two innings and added an insurance run in the fifth en route to knocking off South Decatur 4-1.

In the bottom of the second, Jac-Cen-Del's Snyder lined a single to right to score Wagner. Williamson scored on a ground out off the bat of Ricke. Snyder scored on a error to make it 3-0.

The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the fifth as Huff drew a bases loaded walk to force in Ricke.

South plated its only run in the top of the seventh. Corbin Johnson scored on the JP Scudder single.

For the Cougars, Colby Rathburn had a pair of singles. JP Scudder added a single, a double and one RBI. Toby Bishop, Grady Scudder, Corey Nugent (triple), Devin Pate all had one hit.

On the mound, Brock Lane pitched two innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two. Nugent tossed four innings, allowing no earned runs on no hits and four walks while striking out nine.
