Bayern Munich vs FC Barcelona - LIVE!

Bayern Munich enjoyed another successful night against Barcelona as they beat them 2-0 at the Allianz Arena. The Bundesliga side beat Barcelona 3-0 home and away in the Champions League group stage last season, while there was an 8-2 win in the not-too-distant past.

That record led to Xavi telling his side ahead of the trip to Munich that they were not going to a “house of horrors”, and they had reasons to be confident. Barcelona have been in impressive from this season, while Bayern came in off the back of three straight Bundesliga draws.

But, despite a positive first 45 minutes, a familiar nightmare soon materialised for Barcelona as Lucas Hernandez and Leroy Sane gave the hosts a quick-fire double after the break. It leaves Bayern with two wins from two in Group C, ahead of Inter Milan and Barcelona who both sit on three points.

That’ll do it.

Bayern much-improved after the break and they get the job done on home soil. Hernandez and Sane with the goals, which came in the space of four minutes.

Barcelona have positives to take but they’ve fallen short again in Munich.

90+3 mins: Lewandowski denied a consolation by some brilliant defending from Kimmich. Not his night.

Full-time whistle delayed, as Hernandez goes down with a groin injury. Back underway now.

21:48 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Ball in behind for Torres, he’s a mile offside but on we go.

Into the box he goes, cuts inside, plays the ball back to nobody in particular and Bayern can clear. And then the flag goes up - shambles.

Three minutes added on.

21:45 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Torres pokes an effort at goal, deflected just wide. Corner.

Fati had a chance to let fly before that, took too long to do so though and the chance went.

Corner swung in deep, comes to Kounde at the back post. Lifted back into the box, headed away and Bayern smash it up the pitch.

21:41 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Bayern content to just knock the ball around now, seeing this match out.

Barcelona can still set up a grandstand finish with a goal in the next few minutes, but it looks like they’re going to come up short.

21:38 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Sane brought off and he’s absolutely furious, storms straight down the tunnel in fact. Bit unnecessary.

Fati is on to replace Dembele for Barcelona for the final ten minutes or so.

21:37 , Matt Verri

79 mins: It is indeed Lewandowski, straight into the wall.

Ball crossed back into the box, he flicks it on and it falls for Garcia at the back post but the offside flag is swiftly raised.

21:36 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Lewandowski is brought down 20 yards out, good footwork from the striker to jink past Hernandez.

It’s Alonso and Lewandowski standing over it. Alonso would be a very brave man to take this off the striker.

21:34 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Great challenge from Goretzka on the edge of his own box.

Lewandowski and Torres had combined nicely, the latter was driving into the area but a strong foot came in from the Bayern midfielder.

21:32 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Kimmich drags De Jong down, wasn’t going to let go of that Barcelona shirt until the whistle went.

Earns a yellow card but it’s a ‘good’ one, stopping the counter from the visitors.

21:29 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Mane off for Bayern, Gnabry on to replace him.

Busquets gets caught on the halfway line, manages to make it look like he’s been absolutely clattered as he falls over.

21:26 , Matt Verri

68 mins: There are more goals in this for Bayern, they’re getting so many bodies forward still.

Davies inside to Goretzka, has Sane out wide to his right but goes for goal himself instead. Blocked.

Dembele leads the Barcelona break, beats about five challenges before he slides a pass through to Pedri, just too much on it.

21:23 , Matt Verri

65 mins: That Pedri effort flicked off the post and then out, inches away from halving the deficit.

The confidence Barcelona had playing out from the back in the first half has gone though, they look really vulnerable to the Bayern press.

21:21 , Matt Verri

63 mins: MASSIVE MOMENT!

Pedri and Lewandowski combine brilliantly, the midfielder is in goal. Tries to clip it over the goalkeeper, just rolls wide. Looked like it was going to trickle in.

21:19 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Here comes Musiala again, Barcelona’s midfield has completely disappeared.

Drags the shot wide, should really have done better. Worrying times for the visitors, they’re all over the place.

21:18 , Matt Verri

61 mins: De Jong and Torres on, Gavi and Raphinha off.

Musiala with a strike at goal from just outside the box, blasted over the bar.

21:16 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Here come Bayern again, they win another corner. Barcelona need to deal with this one a lot better.

Too close to the goalkeeper from Kimmich, Ter Stegen off his line to comfortably punch it away.

21:15 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Barcelona look absolutely stunned, Bayern have turned up for five minutes and completely taken control.

More misery for Barcelona on this ground, though there’s still time to turn it around.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona | Leroy Sane 54'

21:12 , Matt Verri

IT’S TWO!

Barcelona being blown away all of a sudden, two goals in about four minutes.

Musiala with brilliant work again, turns with it and slides Sane in. Drives into the box, lovely finish into the far corner as it rolls over the line.

21:11 , Matt Verri

53 mins: That goal has given Bayern a real boost, they fly forward immediately and Muller has space on the edge of the box, only to pass it straight to a Barcelona shirt.

Still they come forward though, Musiala with great footwork. Sane into the box, just about crowded out. Barcelona rattled.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 1-0 Barcelona | Lucas Hernandez 50'

21:08 , Matt Verri

Sane looks the most likely for Bayern, got the beating of Alonso.

He plays it inside, Muller takes an age to do anything before laying it off to Goretzka. He drills an effort at goal from distance, parried behind for a corner.

Kimmich swings it in, Hernandez heads it home! So, so easy. Gets there at the near post, no pressure and it’s a simple finish.

21:06 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Yellow card for Busquets, bit of a lunge on Musiala. Barcelona midfielder not exactly full of remorse.

Eventually goes to apologise and is duly blanked by Musiala. Fair enough.

21:04 , Matt Verri

46 mins: Barcelona should be in front with barely 10 seconds played of the half.

And Bayern kicked off! Raphinha with so much space on the edge of the box, shot whistles just wide of the far post.

Back underway!

21:03 , Matt Verri

Up and running again in Munich. Goretzka on to replace Sabitzer, Bayern’s second chance of the night.

Stats tell the story

20:55 , Matt Verri

More possession for Barcelona, more shots, more shots on goal... all the statistics are in their favour.

Except for the one that matters, it’s still goalless. Got to think Bayern will improve, so Barcelona could come to regret those missed chances.

HT: Bayern Munich 0-0 Barcelona

20:47 , Matt Verri

All that talk about goals - it’s 0-0 at the break.

Barcelona should really be in front, Lewandowski with two big chances that he couldn’t take.

Bayern have been pretty poor overall, even with a couple of bright moments.

20:45 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Not happening for the Bayern wingers. Sane drives into the box, he’s crowded out though and to top it all off the ball bobbles off him and behind for a goal kick.

Just the one minute added on.

20:43 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Sensational block from Mazraoui!

Another dangerous Barcelona attack, comes to Lewandowski in the box and just as he’s about to let fly the challenge comes in to deny him.

Barcelona stay on the attack, Dembele down in the box and wants a penalty. Referee thinks not.

20:41 , Matt Verri

41 mins: That’s a real mess from Bayern in the Barcelona box.

Ball played into the near post, Muller and Mane have made the same run and end up tackling each other.

Just as well for Barcelona too, it would have been a big chance otherwise.

20:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Kimmich with a sloppy pass, Raphinha beats Sane to it and has space on the left.

Goes for an early pass for Lewandowski, but he’s never going to get there ahead of Upamecano.

20:37 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Match has slowed down a bit now, not quite as end-to-end as it was.

Xavi will be a bit frustrated that their impressive start hasn’t brought a goal yet. Neuer is trying his best for them, again it’s a really casual pass out from the back. Gets away with it once more.

20:35 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Nine shots from Barcelona so far, just three for Bayern.

Mane has drifted out to the right wing now, plays the pass inside and makes a run in behind. Ball doesn’t come back, because he’s passed it straight to a Barcelona shirt.

20:31 , Matt Verri

31 mins: As close as Bayern have come to scoring.

Sane looks like he really fancies running at Alonso, probably rightly so too. Onto his left, drifts past the challenge and lays it off for Sabitzer.

He goes for goal, similar to that Raphinha effort and it’s wide.

20:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Busquets caught by a flailing arm from Musiala, catches him on the lip judging by the reaction. Think he’s going to be just fine.

Barcelona again charge forward on the counter, Lewandowski plays it in for Raphinha who is briefly completely free in the box but Davies comes flying back to clear.

20:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Almost!

Gavi leads the Barcelona counter, plays it out wide to Raphinha. Davies lets him cut inside onto his left foot, which is always a mistake.

Fires it into Lewandowski, he lays it off back to Raphinha and the Brazilian’s first-time effort is whipped just wide of the post. Lovely move.

20:25 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Mane has space to run into as the pass is played in behind, so much time that he has a look over to the linesman on his way to catching up with the ball.

Goes for a very casual nutmeg on Kounde, doesn’t come off.

20:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Busquets doing what Busquets does, mopping up anything that’s even vaguely loose in midfield.

Bayern struggling to keep the ball at the moment, no sustained possession at all. Xavi will be delighted with 90% of what his side have done so far - should really be in front though.

20:21 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Bayern are hanging on for dear life here, shaky start from them.

Lewandowski is surely going to score at some point. Alonso stands up a lovely cross to the back post, Lewandowski wins the header but it’s saved by Neuer.

That’s already two big chances for Barcelona’s main man.

20:20 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Sabitzer and Busquets go sliding in for the same ball, Bayern man gets there slightly later and tries to pull out as he does so.

Busquets rolling around on the floor as done him no favours - yellow card for Sabitzer. Very harsh.

Pavard’s night is over, forced off with injury. Mazraoui coming on in his place.

20:18 , Matt Verri

18 mins: MASSIVE CHANCE!

How has he missed? Dembele with a brilliant run to start the attack, plays it wide to Gavi.

It’s a perfect ball to Lewandowski, he’s clean through on goal but lifts the effort over the bar. Xavi can’t believe it.

20:16 , Matt Verri

16 mins: It’s so frantic, an end-to-end start to this match.

Davies flying forward at every opportunity and he’s very much getting the better of his battle with Raphinha.

Lewandowski looking increasingly interested whenever the ball is played back to Neuer now.

20:14 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Barcelona win the first corner of the match, they look really good when they come forward.

Alonso takes, Upamecano loops a clearing header up into the air and Neuer is swiftly off his line to claim. It’s then absolutely dreadful from the goalkeeper, passes it out straight to Lewandowski.

Upamecano swiftly back to save his team-mate.

20:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Pedri gave Neuer a chance there, pretty central with the shot. Bayern goalkeeper stuck out a foot and it was a good save but he should have had no hope.

Wonderful pass from Muller and Sane is away on the right. Running at Alonso, fancies his chances and the shot from distance is blocked.

20:09 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Four players on the floor as the players continue to throw themselves into the challenges. Appeals for a free-kick all over the pitch, referee decides to wave play on each time.

Davies flies forward on the left, brilliant run. Inside to Muller, he tries to slide in Sane but it’s a poor ball.

Lewandowski leads the Barcelona counter, comes to Pedri in the box... brilliant save! Had to score really though.

20:06 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Big collision between Alonso and Pavard, it leaves the Bayern man in a heap on the ground.

Referee plays on though, Pavard not getting any attention until the ball goes out of play. Looks to just be winded but it was a painful one.

20:03 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Busquets caught on the ball deep in his own half, Mane quick to pounce.

Sane has made the run inside Alonso and would have been through on goal, but the pass it behind him.

20:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Alonso has to scramble back very quickly, Sane and Musiala charging after a ball in behind.

Rarely has the Spaniard played in a back four in recent seasons - that’s the assignment tonight.

KICK-OFF!

Underway at the Allianz Arena!

Here we go!

19:57 , Matt Verri

Players are out onto the pitch, all the Bayern players giving Lewandowski a big hug in the tunnel.

Kick-off coming up in just a few minutes.

Not long now...

19:51 , Matt Verri

Ten minutes to go until kick-off in Munich.

Both teams were superb in their opening Champions League matches last week, real excitement in forward areas.

Musiala, Muller, Mane, Sane, Raphinha, Dembele, Lewandowski... has to be goals!

0-0 now guaranteed.

Back in town

19:45 , Matt Verri

What kind of reception will Lewandowski get at the Allianz Arena?

From the Bayern social team at least, it’s a warm one. Not sure that will be entirely the case in the stands...

Familiar faces

19:37 , Matt Verri

Former Arsenal team-mates Hector Bellerin and Serge Gnabry have been catching up ahead of kick-off.

Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, who have played together for Ajax and the Netherlands, also very familiar with each other.

Not many secrets on the pitch tonight!

Job done for Inter... almost

19:21 , Matt Verri

In the other match in this group, Inter Milan are now 2-0 up against Viktoria Plzen.

Dumfries and Dzeko the two goalscorers, with Plzen down to ten men. Safe to say Inter have pretty much got it in the bag.

Hosts have arrived

Xavi on trip to Munich

19:04 , Matt Verri

“I wouldn’t say it’s a house of horror, it’s Bayern Munich.

“I’ve experienced both sides of the coin, beating them and losing to them. I know [recent results have not been favourable], but football is cyclical.

“It’s true we have never won here, which shows the difficulty of this week’s game. But we are in good form and we are excited for Tuesday.”

Bit of focus on one man in particular...

18:55 , Matt Verri

Alonso in from the off

18:48 , Matt Verri

It’s a surprise start for Alonso for the visitors, on his Champions League debut for the club. He’s preferred to Balde and Alba. Christensen partners Araujo at the back, while Raphinha gets the nod over Fati in the front three.

For Bayern, no Coman as expected. Mane and Sane in wide areas, with Musiala and Muller likely to rotate centrally.

Bayern team news

18:43 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Neuer, Pavard, Upamecano, Hernandez, Davies, Kimmich, Sabitzer, Musiala, Sane, Muller, Mane

Subs: Ulreich, De Ligt, Gnabry, Goretzka, Choupo-Moting, Gravenberch, Tel, Mazraoui, Stanisic

Barcelona team news

18:37 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Ter Stegen, Kounde, Araujo, Christensen, Alonso, Busquets, Pedri, Gavi, Raphinha, Lewandowski, Dembele

Subs: Bellerin, Pique, Fati, Torres, Memphis, Alba, Kessie, De Jong, Garcia, Pena, Balde, Tenas

Elsewhere in Group C

18:34 , Matt Verri

Inter Milan are in action in an early kick-off, away to Viktoria Plzen.

Edin Dzeko’s goal after 20 minutes has them 1-0 up at the break, with the Italian side well on track to pick up their first Champions League points of the season.

They would say that...

18:27 , Matt Verri

A 3-0 win at home last season. A 3-0 away away last season. An 8-2 win two years ago.

Safe to say Bayern Munich have very much enjoyed playing Barcelona in recent seasons. La Liga side in much better shape now though.

Lewandowski to star?

18:19 , Matt Verri

Robert Lewandowski back on familiar soil tonight, just a few months after he left Bayern. Wasn’t a particularly amicable departure, you’d have to say.

It’s nine goals in six appearances for Barcelona, including a Champions League hat-trick so far. Not too shabby.

If anyone should know how to mark him though, it will be Bayern...

Prediction

18:04 , Matt Verri

Bayern have not been entirely convincing domestically in the early weeks of the season, drawing their last three games.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have scored 15 goals and conceded just one in their first five league matches with Lewandowski quickly setting into life in Spain.

Goals are certainly on the cards at the Allianz Arena - Bayern have the quality to just about edge a thrilling encounter.

Bayern to win, 3-2.

Barcelona team news

17:55 , Matt Verri

Xavi made a number of changes for the weekend win over Cadiz, but the likes of Lewandowski, Jules Kounde and Ousmane Dembele are all expected to return to the starting lineup.

The form of Dembele means Raphinha may have to once again wait to make his Champions League debut. Marcos Alonso and Hector Bellerin have both been named in the travelling squad.

Predicted Barcelona XI (4-3-3): Ter Stegen; Kounde; Araujo, Garcia, Balde; Busquets, Gavi, Pedri; Raphinha, Dembele, Lewandowski

Kingsley Coman is an injury doubt for the hosts, after missing the draw against Stuttgart on Saturday.

Should he be absent again, Serge Gnabry is likely to come into the side with Sadio Mane continuing in a central position.
